We are having trouble e-mailing artwork in eps format. The Co. we use for our business cards works from a Mac. and only works from eps. We use signmate Elete 5.8. Some designs go through with no problem and others just wont open on his side.
Any Ideas?

When people email eps files they usually don't work, unless they are zipped or stuffed with winzip or stuffit.. i think it is just my mail server, scrambles them up otherwise.

Jimmy, I wish I could send them ai. He only works with eps. Nobody else seems to be having this problem sending files to him.

Robert,

If he is using a Mac and can't (or won't) open an AI file, you may need to consider finding another printer.

Try using postcardpress.com. They accept files in eps and tiff format from either platform. Usually, eps is a big file if it is high resolution, and usually business cards need to be around 300 dpi. If you send it email, get winzip and zip it to send. If the printer accepts it in ai format, he will have to take it into a program and convert it to eps or tiff himself, and most printers want the file ready, especially if they are busy with alot of work. Postcardpress has templates and digital file specs on their site to download, and it makes it much easier.

Here are a couple of ideas to try.

If your software export functions will allow it save it to an older version of eps (such as Illustrator 1.1). Sometimes the inport filters don't know all the codes from newer releases. eps and ai files are very similar. My understanding is that eps was based on a early version of Adobe Illustrator's file format. Sometimes I have been able to substitute the eps suffex for ai and make the file read.

Here is another way to tackle it. Save the file from your softwre as eps then import the eps file into Coreldraw then export it as a second eps file from Corel. The Corel export filter likely works different than your software does.

Check with the printer as to just what software and release he is working on the file with. It's likely he is using Adobe Illustrator. If that is the case you might be better off sending him a ai version of the file.

If you're sending files with text and the fonts haven't been converted to outlines or curves, you may experience some difficulty. If your customer can open one file, but not another, take a close look at each of those files and try to determine what is different between the two. Fonts, line thickness, color, placement on page, coordinates, stroke color, distortions.... and any other thing you can think of....

I'm with Glenn.. any respectable print shop should have the ability to open a wide variety of files.. I mean, come on.. if we signgeeks can do it, so can a printer! Especially when you consider he's likely using CorelDRAW or Illustrator anyways, both of which can open most file formats out there.

That being said.. when you export the EPS file, check for any settings that might affect the file. EPS can be bitmap or vector images so this might be the difference.
