i just had a call from a potential customer asking me for a price on a 2' x 8' banner that reads...
"Christmas Sale 15% off"
i always figure $5 per square foot for something simple.
i gave her a price of $80.00 plus 8% sales tax.

she almost had a COW!!!

"that much for a banner???"
"i just called a another sign shop and they wanted $35.00 dollars!"
"My gawd, why are your banners so high?????"

I said, "well lady, over the years i have become accustomed to doing this thing called "EATING"
she hung up!!! LOL

what would you cahrge for a banner such as this???

pissed in monkeytown,

mark

Eighty bucks! Are you out of your mind? hahahahahaha just kidin bro . I usually get anywhere from $10-15 a running foot and thats 10oz. but then again it can go higher depends whats goes on it. but we were very close.
But I do know for a fact there are some who will only charge $39.95 and slap em together on an 8oz quickie banner material. Sometimes when they go off on me I usually tell them if they're really looking for the deal of the century, over by the freeway is a guy they call six-pack Charlie, who would probably give them the price they want. Hell with them...Cisco

The price I gave was for Square foot. I dunno what a running foot is unless the other one is also comming along.

These prices jive with the latest signcraft magazine survey.

I probably have a higher overhead than most here, but I quote my banners STARTING at 8 bucks a square foot, say $ 120 for this one. And we do them all the time. If we get the job we have the leeway to make a nicer looking product. If you please the customers, they'll come back. If they come in saying "hey, I saw the banner that you did for so-and-so, it's 10 buck per square. I lose some of the phone-ins, but they're usually not worth the trouble anyway.

I realise that I am lucky in the fact that we have a broad customer base and the staff to do the work. It took 20 years of service, but if you satisfy the client, your reputation and the work will follow.

Way to stick to your guns - got a new nickname - Montgomery Mark ! Like an old western gunslinger! LOL

I love your response to the old bat Mark !

As for people that say ......"Such and such said theyll do it for this amount" I say then you go to "Such and such" and get some sucky suck caus thats what your banner's gonna look like when you go to them instead of me !!!! ha ha

The one thing I like to say is "Tell me Mark is the other Shop making any Money at this banner?"
I don't think so...
Your price is more in the ball park then his and if he thinks that all in all with materials and labour he is going to make a profit, then you should wait until next year and buy his equipment for next to nothing when he goes out of business......

The reason they can make banners this cheap is they are probably paying their employees about 6.00 an hour, and are grabbing every job that comes their way with low low prices. This is one of the reasons I closed my storefront sign shop. I would get people coming in wanting a 25.00 banner. I wouldn't do it.....so they went to signsNOW or fastsigns or speedyrama, SignUpHere, SignsOverThere, SignsRighthere or one of those. They do those for that price.

It's funny how some people look at the material and figure it should be cheap. I wonder what the prices are for a 4' by 8' banner as compared to a 4' by 8' aluminum.
The difference in materials is not that much , but since a banner can be rolled up and is temporary, people expect 1/4 the price.

The banner is $80.00...but you are only giving her $80.00 worth, if she wants more, then she'll have to pay more. A radio talk show host today was talking about "Worth." He's coming up to his contract deadline and he was pretty funny talking about what he does, how he does it and what it is worth to the station. In that perspective, he usually gets what he wants, because sponsors pay for HIM to do their commercials and HIM to be on the air rambling about what THEY like to hear. Same with signs. Give em hell in Bama Bubba!

I guess it's the same every where. I charge $7.50/ Sq. Ft. with Vinyl on 13 oz. -or- $10./sq.ft.on 15 oz. Digital. If they want it plain I tell them that I prefer not to do plain stuff because it's my rep. & I want to make sure it looks good & will last. When they say It's only going to be up a week you know it will be up a month.
I just had one of those monday on a quote I sent out last week. I'll try to get a jpeg of the quote & photo of what they went with & post it later.

I'm wondering why the 2000 official computer graphics pricing guide shows $16.50/lineal ft for a lightweight 24" banner? I was getting ready to quote a banner for a lady and I almost swallowed my dentures for the price! If I used that price/ft Marks banner would be about $132 which is way over what most of you would charge. I'm a newbie and this price guide isn't helping me get any jobs.

How about simple menu board 3'x 8'? I have a hard time thinking about charging $21.50 sq ft. What is a more realistic cost/sq ft?

$90 to $120 on average for a plain and quick professional layout with 2 to 3 colors. Did one last week (2x6) for $185 with just a little extra time in adding a graphic for a duck call mfg. It doesn't matter what the advertisement is made of or how long it will be used, the customer pays for materials, labor, advertising value and profit. That's just the way it is, they can't cut my rates because someone else will do it cheaper. The lady probably thought, 'well it's only going to be up for 3-4 weeks so it should be cheap'
I always ask what it would cost them for that much exposure with radio or newspaper ads, kinda puts things into perspective then.

I have no prob with Mark's price at all. Banner material is not cheap. Banners take time to make and to handle. If somebody wants to do it cheaper, let 'em. Maybe they'll keep doing it cheaper and cheaper, until they disappear.

I jusst bought a sign shop 3 1/2 months ago. Fortunately the shop had been in business since 1986, has a store front, and a very large customer base for such a small town that we are. I have upped prices somewhat as the previous owner hadn't raised most prices since 1996. For a simple banner, we get 9.50 a sq. ft. WE decided to start charging for rush orders. We are up to $25.00 for rush and still no one is balking.
