Bert Monroy, who appears on the "Screensavers" tv show as their expert Photoshop instructor, has some fantastic digital creations on his website. Click on Fine art, many of which are signs, and see if you can tell the difference between digital and photo. He says he did not start with any scans to create these. http://www.bertmonroy.com He also has an excellent book on photoshop techniques.

Definitely nice work but it's pretty obvious those images are 100% computer generated and not scans.. There's just some minor flaws that are dead give-aways like crisp, straight lines at the intersections of two textured planes, and the absence of shadows cast onto those textured planes by the texture itsself.
There's also some wobbles, very minor but almost like his drawing tablet or mouse lost control for a second and he didnt bother cleaning it up.. maybe intentionally.
Maybe it's just the difference between my LCD screen versus Tube monitors (LCD's pick up more image detail), or having been in the business of creating photorealistic artwork through 3D animation software so I know what details to look for that hint of computer generation.
