Coat the whole surface with West System Epoxy resin. You won't put a fingernail scratch in that, its "haahdah than a hoo-ahs haaht."

This is two diffrent things, right Stephen? Making the surface harder is different that making the inside of the board act like denser material. The former can be accomplished as simply as putting primer on it, but the latter?? I've gotta hear this one.

You are right, I sould have made this question more to the point! To make the surface harder so that when you face it with your painted graphics it will not dent as easily..
Cam is very close, But if you Epxoy it and find a mistake in the graphics it pretty hard to cut or correct the work.
What I use is the UV-One-Shot clear spray bomb. Carve, cut shape your project and clean it up after. Giving it a healthy coating with the One-Shot Clear will harden the surface to the point of never denting it. If you have to add some more info or clean up a mistake then you still can, and reshot some clear over it again.
I find it makes it as tough as nails before priming or painting.
It works for me but I guess everyone will have to try it for themselves..
