I WAS WONDERING HOW LONG EVERYONE KEEPS THEIR SIGNCRAFT MAGAZINES FOR. THE REASON I ASK IS THAT I ABSOLUTELY TREASURE THEM AND REFER BACK TO ARTICLES WRITTEN IN THE BEGINNING OF 1994.
NOW WITH OUR POOR EXCHANGE RATE THE SUPPLIERS WHO WE USED TO GET THEM FROM HAVE DECIDED TO CANCEL THE SUBSCRIPTION DUE TO LACK OF INTEREST. FOR THE LIFE OF ME HOW CAN ANYONE BE SO FRIKKEN STUPID, I MEAN THEIR IS A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE TO BE GAINED FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE WILLING TO SHARE SUCH GREAT KNOWLEDGE IN FULL COLOUR ON A REGULAR BASIS!
IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS IF THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE SUPPLIER IN SOUTH AFRICA WHO STOCKS THESE MAGAZINES I WOULD BE FOREVER GRATEFUL.
ALL THE BEST.

How long do you keep them? How long is a string? You never throw away a SignCraft magazine. Bad things can happen to you.
Seriously, I have every issue securely stored in binders and one of the most rewarding things that I can do is to go back and thumb through some of the earlier issues. It reminds me of all the great work that has been done over the years and it also is an indication of how far we have come in a very short time.
That first issue was in black and white and only a few pages but it was a gold mine to me and many others. The McIltrot brothers put those early issues together on a ping pong table in their grandparents garage. Personally, I very thankful for those guys - they gave us a great tool and a source for ideas that was greatly needed.
Sorry, I can't help with the supply problem.

One must NEVER throw away Signcraft. I have Vol. 1 No. 1 the Premier issue framed and hanging on the wall of my office. To me it's the Gutenberg Bible of the sign business. It hangs in a place of honor right below the picture of me and Walter Gretzky(Wayne's Dad).

I have every issue starting in 1980 except for a couple that I loaned out and never got back. I was interested in beginning a signpainting career when I met a guy painting signs in his garage and started picking his brain. I don't remember his name, but it just happened to be the spring of 1980 and he knew about Signcraft and gave me their address. I refer back to them often for inspiration.

Here in Canada I believe it is illegal to throw out old issues of Signcraft.
Even the oldest issues I have are valuable sources of information and inspiration. I have them as far back as mid 1980's
I'm sure Ray has older issues but then again he is an older issue than me too.

My first issue was May / June of '85. I've been subscribing, & cherishing every issue since then. The oldest issue that I have is Fall of '81. Definately the koolest cover ever produced! It features The Raiford Bros. of Houston, Texas, holding a "cigars" sign, with a bunch of vintage style (mostly gold leaf) signs in the background. A classic, inspiring photo. I will grab a handful of old issues once in a while & go through them. I agree, it should be illegal to throw them away. I have noticed the current issues are resembling a computer manual, more than an artistic sign magazine, which is what Signcraft is me. The current state of the industry I suppose. My only complaint has always been... Why not weekly?! Hahaha! Thank you, & keep up the great work SignCraft staff!

I subscribe to almost all the sign mags. Each issue, I cut out signs and designs that I like and keep a sort of scrap book that I look to for inspiration on layouts, colour schemes etc. But I would never even think about cutting up my Signcrafts!!!! I've kept every issue I've ever received in binders for safe keepings.

Hey, watch it Dan! I guess I have been around a little longer than you...but not TOO much longer.
In addition to my SignCraft issues I have every issue of Signs of the Times back to 1956, and every issue of Sign Business (some that were like newspapers in their early days).
The man that I worked for in Abilene gave me some old issues of Signs of the Times that go back into the 20's. But that was before my time, Dan.

Thanks guys I see it's quite a touchy subject and I also never ever, ever lend them out,I shall be monitoring the exchange rate with baited breath 'cause it's 12 Rands to your 1 Dollar plus shipping per each issue but it's something I might just have to force myself to do.
