I get many calls and emails from folks who I don't know. It's flattering really, and I get to talk to lots of really nice people. It's almost as fun as working. Many folks who contact me are trying to do something creative and need some advice. Some need a supplier for materials, or help with a specific technique. Most are exploring new ideas - going places they haven't been before.
Most often the biggest help I can give someone is a little bit of confidence in themselves and their own abilities. We all need a boost every once in a while.
But there are two things I won't do... I won't lend tools. And I won't design or build someone elses project - unless I'm specifically hired to do so. Either they are able to take on the project themselves or they aren't.
I expect the same from anyone I talk to. It's a matter of pride and respect for others. To do otherwise would take all the fun out of what I do. As a professional I happily pay for what I need or take the time to create it myself.
I view this board in much the same way. I come here for friendly banter and conversation. I gain lots of knowledge here as well.
It's great when one can ask for help with a supplier or gain knowledge about a special technique. And it happens all the time. I have lots to learn!
But I also know of some who won't come here any more because of the LACK of professionalism sometimes shown. Lack of respect for people and for their craft. Lack of respect for others rights or property.
Every time that happens it is a great loss. We all could be richer for what the folks who leave could have contributed here. I hope they come back sometime and give us another chance.
My resolution for 2002 is to do my bit to make this an even better place. It is my sincere hope that all the others who come here share that same dream.
Thanks for creating this place Steve & Barb.
And a big thank you as well to all the folks who have encouraged and helped me this past year.
Happy New Year ALL!
