Well, tried the vinyl/cloth spray paint. Works OK but the smell is terrible, I know for sure that the place this is going will not be able to have this smell while I apply the spray. So, back to the drawing board. Thought of a rubber mat but no can do, ambulance personal don't like that idea. If a person can't use paint what else is there?

Am trying to figure out if there is a way to letter carpet. Have a local customer who has a automatic door that opens when you stand in front of it and seems that people just don't know not to stand in front of it while they are inside talking or just standing around. It doesn't take me long to know not to stand in front of a automatic door when it's 20 degrees outside but there's always someone who doesn't get it. Anyone know of a way to permanetly letter carpet? Thought about stencil and a paint dye? Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks,
JC

The first thing I thought of was blowpaintin it! Actually airbrushing it on...stencils might be nice for a clean edge...depends on the carpet. How would you "de-scotch gard" it so the paint would stick?

Judy, I think I'd use that yellow marking paint that comes in rattle cans for striping parking lots. I'd mask off a boxed area as a safety zone around the doorway and use stencils for the lettering. You could even cut a vinyl mask, and spray several real light coats on waiting a minute or two between. I think it'll bond well to the fibres and I know it'll handle the traffic.

I used to airbrush carpet all the time with Createx then add the extender for extra protection. I believe One shot would work as well... Prime the area to be painted with 5004 Vinyl Primer. Use 2 thin coats of primer. Then paint area. Either way you choose, paint has to be applied in thin coats and heated well!

Thanks for the suggestions. Does anyone know how well these paints stand up to carpet cleaners since this is a well traveled area, I mean loads of traffic (people) and gets cleanned almost weekly. Thanks.

i wonder if any of those people who don't care to stand there with the door open will notice or care about a message on the carpet??? Maybe put up some of those guardrails and aim the sensor on the door down a bit... that way, the people will be in the way if they are in the door.... and you could do a cool sign that says something like "Hey DIPWAD, don't stand in front of the door!!! We're FREEZING OUR KEISTERS OFF OVER HERE!!!!"
just a thought..... hehe

Why not put"AUTOMATIC DOOR" on the door itself? To be seen when they enter! OR on a free standing pedestal inside? Either way people will do what they want to do sign or no sign(ie no parking) People will do the same when they leave a building also. Just check out Wal-Mart!

Believe it or not,I'ver been here and done that.
Years ago we had to put a Bell logo on a carpeted wall...here's what we did.
Using the sand blast stencil made for glass we hand cut the sencil and removed the areas we wanted painted then simply sprayed the carpet with krylon (mist coats only). Then simply remove the stencil and over spray everything with scotch guard.
These days it would be easier and better (I would think)to cut the stencil from Intermediate vinyl.
Thats nearly 20 years ago and it's still there.(of course it gets no traffic)
Werks fer me it'll werk fer you.
