My dad is putting in a new vinyl pool liner next weekend and we want to put an eight foot tall Kokopelli right in the middle of the ramp. Has anybody done graphics on a pool liner before? Just wondering if the chemicals would have adverse effects on HP vinyl, or if vinyl inks might be better. Any thoughts or advice are much appreciated.

I had a house about 2 years ago that has/had a pool with a vinyl liner. The liner was in working condition except that the original marble-like colour was faded so I drained it and painted it. At first I used Serico (sp?) Reflex Blue screen ink, but as I worked towards the shallow end I found I was going to run out. As the prettying up of the pool was one of the last jobs before selling the house, the extra screen ink was going to be more expensive than we were willing to pay so I made a decision to switch to one shot. The colour was quite a bit different (One Shot being more like Light Thalo) but the overall effect was quite pleasing in that the deeper end was darker. Its now been about 2 years plus since I painted the liner and we are still in touch with the purchaser. My observations have been: As far as colour longevity goes, the oneshot has faded a little whereas the vinyl ink has stayed very close to the original colour. The Oneshot has peeled in some out of the way places, probably due to preparation whereas the screen ink has stuck 100% with the same preparation. The Oneshot is more "slippery" underfoot when bathing. The Oneshot covered OK but not as well as the screen ink. Drying time was quicker on the screen ink for obvious reasons. Oneshot will lift in places when vacuuming the pool if it is allowed to be damaged, whereas screen ink bonds (again for obvious reasons) The one shot colour is electric when viewed with 3' of water over it by comparison to the screen ink.
Disclamer: I'm just reporting my experience - of course One Shot isnt supposed to be used like this but it is to the products' credit that it has done as well as it has. Preparation was by way of emptying the pool by syphon and then pump, 1 days drying in local summer temps, high pressure and temperature clean (90°f - pressure ?)pump dry and air dry again, wipe down with acrylic retarder/reducer and apply both mediums by spray gun with coping and tiling masked. I can't speak for vinyl in this application but I would opt first for vinyl ink, second for another liquid coating after some research(with Oneshot a distinct consideration). On a liner in good order I would be very careful with the liquid you use for prepping. My .01 US$ David
