Finally have my computer up and running again. Loaded up ATM and getting my fonts back on.

I loaded another program that included fonts, but they are listed in all capital letters, which is a pain when scrolling thru the list.

I tried selecting the font in right clicking - usually it gives you the 'RENAME' option. But it doesn't. I tried saving one to a temp file, but it still doesn't give me the option.

Does anyone know of a way to change it to upper & lower case? THANKS!!!

Yea, Si, that AND right-clicking on it. The RENAME option wasn't available either way - was grey, not black and I couldn't select it.

Any other ideas?

Dana you shouldn't try to rename the file for true type fonts it is likely to screw up the font, even tho it can be done.If I recall there was a file utility for windows 3.11 called printers apprentice or something like that that had this as one of it's font utilities.I renamed one or two of my fonts & the preview defaulted to a dos screen font which is undesirable not to mention the way the font looked when I tried to use it in a program,...

Somewhere while surfing the Internet I came across a company that had software to rename your fonts. I don't know if thats what you are looking for, but if you do a search you might find it.

I think you may be trying to rename while still within the program. I have a few programs that don't allow this feature as well. What I then have to do is connect to that folder and file(s) from outside the program, maybe even close the one your using altogether.

Tim, I've renamed TrueTypes and haven't had any problems . . . as long as I renamed them prior to installing them.

Dana..I use mostly Type one fonts from the CorelDraw CD, using ATM to install them to a seperate folder, so that they don't build up in the Windows font folder. I just checked and in THAT folder the "rename" option is available, but not in the Windows font folder. Try using Type one fonts instead, they are actually a bit cleaner than True Type.

OK... must be doing something wrong here...

They are True Type fonts and are presently in the Windows font folder. I don't have any programs open - I just go there thru Windows Explorer. I brought them up and hi-lited one, hit right click, the window pops up and the 'rename' is grey - can't select it.

I have ATM, too. I thought maybe that would help, so I opened that, went to ADD FONTS, and picked one. It copied it into the new set, without giving me an option for the name of the font itself, only the set. When I went into the set and hi-lited it, there was no option to rename. In help, it tells me how to rename a SET, but not individual fonts. Where do you find that?

Heck, I don't want to actually rename them, just want to change it from totally upper case to lower case, thats all.

That's very strange. Something open is blocking/over-riding your system. This is a key feature in any Windows program, usually open programs or not.

You cannot rename fonts that are located in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. This folder has certain restrictions on it.

You need to install fonts into a different folder if you want to rename them, but that's only renaming the FILENAME, not the actual font name that's embedded into the font file, which is what software uses to identify the fonts.

There is a utility called Truetype Renamer that I use. I believe it is shareware. It will rename fonts to the name that appears on a drop down list like in MS Word. Fonts that normally show up with names like BS010002.ttf in a Windows folder will now show up with a proper name like "Benson Bold."

The file is 12k and I could easily upload it to my server but I am not sure of the implications.
So, if you want any other info or a copy of it the writer of this software can be reached at:

Fonts carry internal information, much more than you see by just previewing them. All this subdata can be safely changed by either Fontlab (www.fontlab.com) or Fontographer (www.macromedia.com). Just renaming the file (font.ttf to say, prettyscript.ttf) will not change its name when accessed in a program - no matter what type it is. (Current Windows font flavors being T1, TTF and OTF).

The programs mentioned above are a bit pricey, but if you do more than casual font creation or manipulation, they are the tools to have. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Fontlab, as Fontographer hasn't been updated or supported for several years (although they still sell it).

For the budget minded fontfreak, here's a totally free truetype renamer - http://www.freenuts.com/Zip/ttr_100.zip

As for ATM and the Windows font folder, when you use ATM unless you check "Do not copy fonts to folder" it will in fact copy them there (so in essence, you'll have two copies of the same font on your computer). With the box checked, ATM will place a shortcut to the font, which you will notice if you open the font folder (the TTF icon will be there, but with the telltale arrow on it).

Windows will still cache the fonts, so you're not saving anything there, the only savings is hard drive space by not having two copies of the same font floating around.

I would say fonts are the easiest thing to get addicted to that has no 12-step program for recovery!

Dana,
I've used Corel Draw to create several true type fonts. The display name and the file name are two different things. What you are running into is that the display name (what you are seeing in your fonts directory (folder) is embedded in the font file. If you change the display name, you won't be able to access the file. The actual font file name may or may not be the same as the display name. As a quick example, I took the Arial.ttf from my fonts folder via copy/paste into a temporary folder. The actual file name for this font is Arib__.ttf.

Check your folder menu bar. Go to View, Folder Options in your fonts folder. Click the view tab and make sure the advanced settings, allow all upper case names box is un-checked.

Hope this helps!
Dave

Dana,
I found a font renaming utility at http://titan.glo.be/~gd33771/download.html while looking for a font I needed. The name of the utility is TrueType Renamer 1.0. It is freeware.
Hope this helps,
