Any pinstripers out there? How much of one color paint to you mix up when matching or striping a complete vehicle? Do you mix close to an ounce or more? Closer to a 1/2 ounce? Do you mix a color and add additives to it, then discard the remaining paint?

No. I don't waste paint. I use those little 3oz unwaxed cups and just put about a 1/4 inch in the bottom. I squirt in my "attitude adjusters", and if there's any paint left when the job is done, it's not much. Some of my jobs are for fleets where I use the same colors over and over. In these cases, I mix a lot of the color I need, and use that day after day, just removing the skin off the top each new time. I've been doing it this way for 25 years... and I may be doing it wrong, but my paint jobs seem to hold up for years of service. And they usually look pretty good... you can be the judge by looking at them @ www.saragraphics.com LE

Nope.......For pinstriping I usually mix one ounce and then put 1/3 of it in a plastic coverable cup and mix in my additives. The original colors are in a 1oz glass sealed jar. Stays fresh for a very long time. A full painted pinstripe TransAM takes 1 & 2/3 ozs of gold paint. The hood eagle I airbrush with AutoAir paints and clear it afterwards.

I try to keep it at a 1/2 ounce or less. Course, if it's one of those difficult colors to match, you know, the beige with the green or whatever in it, I might end up with a quart GM, is pretty easy, Ford can be a pain at times and THANK YOU Chrysler, most of theirs match up to One Shot straight out of the can. I pre thin my paint, so it usually gets tossed when I'm done. Trying to save a tiny bit of paint, thats not going to work real well a week later seems like wasted effort.

Just some thoughts before I go to work......
LE, I like the style used in your lettering reminds me of those Jersey guys, a style like that is worth doing. I understand the skinning which can be cured by storing the paint in closed containers upside down but if you add Paint-Sav by Sapphire' just a couple drops' to an open container it will not skin for days . This way the properties of the paint are not affected by the skinning.
Pierre, what make gold do you use? and what additives? Glass airbrush jars work well when using plastic caps.
George, nice try! hahahaha Seriously, the beige you speak of I've found is usually turns green due to the amount of black added to the Imt.Gold and the Ford greys can be made if you add a pinch of Imt Gold. Myself, I find that paletting my brush with ChromaFlo workd best for me instead of additives to the paint.

Myself I will only mix as much as I need for the job but before putting it away or throwing it in the garbage I will put some on a sheet of paper and write down the customers name and the mixture of paints for that colour 1 part this and 2 parts that.. Allow it to dry and then staple to the invoice so as the next time I will have the mixing arrangement ant the colour sample for up coming jobs..... Besides how much does small 1 ounce or 2 ounce cups of paint going to set you back????
