I have to paint some plastic fenders and gas tanks for an atv. My paint supplier said that no matter what I put on there due to the harsh conditions that the paint would crack and possible peel. He said he did not have anything to help the paint adhere to the plastic. Does anyone know of an primer or additive to help? I am using acrylic enamil.

Most acrylic enamels have flex additives.

Tim...do not use the flex additive on these things...your supplier is right its only gonna help to a degree and if it flexes enuff or takes a hard enuff hit,its going to come off. Adhesion promoters are sold, but if you use too much it will prevent anything from sticking, you also have to know what type plastic it is so you get the correct one(diff types for diff types of plastics. Clean the piece with Rapid prep only...do not use lacquer thinner, acetone, wax and grease remover etc. If its a new piece wash it with hot soapy water first then rapid prep it....scuff it with about 400 grit and shoot it...with the hardener and remember on a piece like that the less millage you have on it paint wise the better(less to flex when its knocked)so once its adequately covered don't pile more on leave it alone.
Now having said that, also be careful to clean it again with the rapid prep after you scuff it,there are some manufacturers out there, bikes in particular that use composition plastics designed to excrete/bring to the surface oils so that you cannot do thing like weld/fix/repaint em and you have to buy completely new pieces. Hope this helps
