I'm trying to install my scanner on my new computer. Scanner is HP Scanjet 6200C (USB Cable)connected to Dell Pentium III with Windows 98 Second Edition. The scanner will scan the image but when I try to place it, the computer tells me that the scanner cannot be found. The control panel tells me that the scanner is not installed. I have reinstalled several times and still have the same results.

Is this some compatibility problem with Win98 or what?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi, Ray......I'm not computer moxie enough to tell you what you need to do, but my son will be here soon and he can. I have the same setup as you do, so I know it's not a compatibility problem.

In the meantime.........when you go to "programs" on your start function bar, does it show "scanjet" there?

The scanner is listed in the programs menu, but when I click on it I get the message that the scanner cannot be found.

I'm sure you've done the obvious by checking all of your connectors? Are you plugged into the right port on the back of your computer? That's what I did first time and I had the same result as you.

Is it showing up on the "scanners and cameras" and, further, on the "devices" screen?

USB cable is in the right hole (I think - there are two USB connections and I have tried them both)and everything seems to be right. The scanners is not listed in the "Cameras and Scanners" box of the control panel, although it is listed in the "Programs" menu.

Ray...are both of your USB ports listed as active or enabled? Also, HP is famous for it's poorly written and incompatible drivers. You might want to check their website....
www.hp.com

for the latest drivers. You can also check Microsofts Knowledge Base for info on your scanner. I bought a UMAX scanner and had some sort of VMM32...error for about a year. Sometimes it would work and sometimes I would spend a hour or so fiddling with it. One day I had enough time to check Knowledge Base and found my error message. I downloaded a stupid 12 byte file and installed it on my computer and everything has been fine since. It doesn't take much for things not to work. In my case it turned out to be an outdated Windows 95 file that came with the scanner. Since I was using Windows 98, there was a problem. But, of course, nobody ever tells you this stuff. If you bought a scanner that was manufactured several years ago during the Windows 95 era, this just might be your problem.

I may be wrong...but...some scanner and computer combinations have a quirk! Some computers will not recognize a scanner unless it was turned on BEFORE Windows had booted up! Two solutions:
1. turn on the scanner and reboot
2. go to "start", "settings", "control panel","systems", "device manager"..and click "refresh"...then close it all out...

Your computer will have "found" the scanner! It sounds complicated, but only takes a few seconds...much faster than rebooting.

Hope that helps!

Duhh! Gotta learn to proofread my lousy typing!

I've had problems before installing devices manually through Windows. (ie. using the .INF file through the control panel like you're supposed to) Sometimes you have to use the installation disk instead, and sometimes doing it manually as above is the only way to get it to work. Also, as Louis said, make sure your USB ports are active in the device manager.

Sounds like a usb problem. My cd writer is on a usb channel and always boots up with a device problem in system devices.
I delete the device and then refresh which makes my cd active again.
Of course that is a temp workaround for a long term problem.

I also have an HP USB scanner. To install you can not plug the USB cable in untill you have installed the software first. Also make sure you go to add/remove programs & uninstall before installing it again.Hope this helps?

Thanks to all of you for the advice. Unfortantly, none have worked yet. I am also having trouble getting the plotter to work, so it is something strange. Printers are OK.

I have gone back to the old computer for now because of the work load in the shop. When I make another stab at converting I will have my trusty computer geek at my side.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Ray...it sounds like you have a com port or irq conflict. You've got something in that new computer that is conflicting with the plotter or the plotter isn't set up right. It could be one of those "back to square one" deals. Remove the plotter, remove the scanner. Re-boot...re-install windows. Then, test what you have in the computer to make sure it's all working. Then...add the plotter and see if it works. Then...add the scanner and see if it works. Follow all directions for both devices. My guess is something is screwed up in your registry, or system.ini or win.ini and the best way is to "go back to square one". Please let us know what it was when you get the problem solved. Good luck.....

go to control panel/system/device manager/and highlight computer at the top, then click on properties, and check your dma's for conflicts,
I bet you got one! Probably an extra printer port or zip drive.
Good Luck,
Bill
