Jeffery... There isn't a REAL CLOSE match in Grber/3M cast 2 mil, but the closest would be either Bermuda Blue or Eucalyptus.

Jeffery....Spar-Cal 2ml Premium #1570 Aqua is 'close, sort of', but translucent will be harder to match in vinyl...you may have to try to mix translucent inks (I'm not sure if that's possible).

HE HE HE I LOVE these post. The "Pantone" color you are trying to match,is made for the SPECIFIC use in the offset printing trade, that uses translucent inks!!!! This is like Apples and Oranges(they ain't the same) I have yet to figuire out why someone would even attempt taking opaque products such as vinyl or paint to match inks? Wouldn't it be easyer to educate the customer on these very BASIC facts of pigmentation? Good Luck on letting the customer run your business

Pat.. It isn't a matter of a customer running our business. What often happens is...a new business gets their logo or "identification" designed and gets their business cards, letterhead, envelopes etc. printed. The only color references they have are pantone colors that the printer used. All we are trying to do is match those colors as closely as possible. It isn't going to be exact but we should at least try to come as close as possible.

Dave is exactly right here. This customer came in with this project and handed me a pantone number. Another "division" of their business came to me earlier this year with a similar request, along with a color swatch. That sign was hand painted MDO so it was pretty easy to create a matching color.
The new signs are to be done in vinyl. There are enough of them with little time to reprodue them all that vinyl would be the best way for me to go. So I think, anyway. I suppose the could be screen printed but I'm not set up for that, and there's the time factor.
Anyway, when these customers come in with this type of situation, I usually tell them that I can get it REAL close to the color choice but that it might not be 100%. In this case, the decision maker said that would be fine as he trusts me.
I'm just looking for the closest possible match without having to rely on a vinyl salesman's judgement. Not that I have not done that before, but I figured you are all a little closer to reality than they are.
THANKS EVERYONE!

Letting the customer run the business? Yeah, feels that way sometimes. I look at it this way: these people come in here with an idea that I can mold into something that they need or think that they need.
Sometimes I don't cover everything and get burned. Bright side of that is I can learn not to let it happen next time.
This bullboard REALLY helps to prevent a lot of the mistakes I had planned to make!
THANKS AGAIN!

Wish they all knew what pantone number they wanted ... would give me a refrence point other than "light blue" Had a job a few months back to design some business cards (for a company called Image Pro visual advertising ... go figure) After cleaning the crappy bmp of a logo they gave me and laying out the cards the colors they wanted were "eggplant" and "toast" ... ??? ... go figure again haha

My point exactly! At my disposal I have color charts of the materials I use that I let the customer pick from. I think what I am trying to say to all is that... The customer has to be responsible for ALL color and material choices. This involves having charts, samples of materials, and examples of the type of work done. NONE of this can be accomplished over the phone! to aviod any mis-communtication to preform said job. I have Two(2) sets of these samples. One at the shop they can come buy to look at.Or one I can take to them(like a traveling salesman) Sign suppliers are more tham happy to provide you with these tools of the trade for your convienance that will allow you to be more professional in this business of making signs. Many of these suppliers are located here on the "Merchant"page Hope this helps
