Maybe NOT knowing that much about "puters" and the use of the U.S.Mail has something to do with me NEVER have had a virus! Or possibly it is the fact that I am not in such a hurry. What do you think?

Hi Pat, I think you are just lucky, it has nothing to do with your ability, the virus will find you. It found me and infected a lot of innocent people. Everyone was very kind to offer advice on virus programs and information on not to accept anything from someone you do not know.

The "great" thing or the downside of this virus is that it comes from people you think you can trust encouraging you to open it!! Most of the infected files came from sign people autopainters, pinstripes etc...all people I have had contact with and not in some cases....luckily my virus program picked them all up....but this was alot different to "Snowwhite's virus". That's why W32 Badtrans has been so effective worldwide and so fast!

With w32\BadTrans it had an automatic activation in outlook express and then sent out to addresses in the inbox of a different account then the one it was received into...it's been a tough one to purge cause it attatches itself to working windows files (my understanding of all the time I wasted on it yesterday)...I had gotten the warning to delete and when I tried to it automatically activated...
Good luck to whomever might be it's next victim!

I have a question on this. How do you tell when your anti-virus has caught one? I'm using Norton Systemworks 2001 and just added Norton 2002 anti-virus. Supposedly, this thing runs all the time, and I go to live update often, but I have never seen anything to indicate that a virus was snagged before it could do its dirty work.
Your thoughts and opinions, please.

Heads, If you use eMail, ou need to have some sort of virus detection/protection and as Si mentioned, keep it updated regularly. At One Shot / Spraylat we use McAfee and I keep it updated usually weekly. You can also sign up for Virus alerts to be sent to you from McAfee. I received a alert regarding the W32/Badtrans virus yesterday morning which reminded me it was time to update the virus data files, which I did, and this morning I received an eMail that was carrying the virus in an attachment. I was saved this time.

Bill, if you have Norton Systemworks setup to monitor your email, it checks every message as it is being received. In "Options" you have the choice of what it should do when one is found. Mine is set to advise me...then I just follow the recommended procedure.
So, when it finds a virus on an incoming email, you'll get a full screen display with the word ALERT in big letters and an explanation of the virus that was found...you can't miss it. If yours is set to delete the message automatically, you may not get notification - I don't know for sure because I've not used that option. You may just be lucky so far. I didn't get any for the longest time, then the last two months they've been coming fast and furious.
Check your Norton Systemworks options to see how you're set up.

Thanx very much, took your suggestion and put "alert" so it should show on top of all windows. Been lucky so far, evidently have never had a virus, other than the kind that makes my nose run, and feet smell.
Thanx, again.

Hey PKing, I passed your place last Wednesday when we were hi balling to Atlanta on I459 for Thanksgiving. Was going to try and stop on the way home but when we got to McCalla we were dodging hailstones as big as golf balls. Gosh, talk about an Alabama welcome!

Several years back, on this BB, Sarah Clark told a story about virus software that she liked. The computer mag's rated it higher than Norton or McAfee. I've been enjoying it for several years. Ihave mine set to check for and automatically do the upgrades every time I come on line. They do have a demo version I believe.

You're right, and you're wrong Rick - but by no fault of your own.
The best AV software available, is Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Once upon a time, they called it "AVP" which stood for Anti Viral Pro. They are a russian company (owned and operated by a very pretty russian woman believe it or not!) that had a deal with Central Command (a U.S. company) to market their product in America. Kaspersky moved the operation to America a while back, and their contract with Central Command ran out. Central Command pulled a sleazy trick after this - they created a program called "AVX" and made it look VERY similar to AVP - and did not tell anyone on the website that this was an entirely different product!
After a lawsuit, they did change the look of their site, product and display warnings that they were no longer affiliated with Kaspersky.
AVX is in a nutshell, a piece of crap. AVP, is still the king of the hill in AV software.
McAfee is a pretty weak piece of software. while Norton's products come in 2nd to Kaspersky. Norton has just raised their update subscription from $3 to $9 per year. Not much, but still a fact to consider.
I hope this clears up the mysteries of AV software. As has been stated before, NOTHING is worth the space it occupies, unless it is updated regularly! And visit Windows Update anytime you hear of a virsus or security issue... Microsoft may not be perfect, but at least they support their products.
PS - Kaspersky is the choice of most hackers, for what its worth.
