Gray,
I have been importing files from SignLab to CorelDraw7. Every line and item in the SignLab file had to be ungrouped first, then converted to an AI file. Then it was possible to import into Corel7.(Full version of 7) I now use CorelDraw9 which I purchased for $42 with shipping from TigerDirect. I was still exporting into Corel9 the same way...till Bob Darnell enlightened me in this post. Text to Graphics makes it one step faster. Now all I do is convert text to graphics, export as an AI file..then import it into CorelDraw9..works great!
Lots faster than ungrouping every line!

Thanks Judy, (for getting back to the topic )
as I said earlier, CD7 select seems to be the culprit.
Thanks for the clear instructions.
