Just an idea to throw around. Don't know if it will work, but here goes.
The Governor of Louisiana has issued a challenge to the law enforcement agencies, firefighters and citizens in general to purchase a fire engine for the city of New York to replace one of the ones lost in the 911 disaster.
The truck is being built at a facility near here. My idea is that perhaps we could get together and do the lettering and embellishing to make it special. I would like to know if anyone is interested before I make contact.
Do you think we could get donations from Signgold and gold leaf and other suppliers like you do for a meet? I thought in would be in the Letterhead spirit and also good publicity for the Letterhead movement.
Don't know much about organizing something like this but what better way to learn. I'm willing to put it together and feel I have the resources for advice and guidance via this BB.
Let me know if I'm being realistic or not. Be honest, as I sometimes tend to dream a bit too much.

I hope Timi sees this, he's perty good with the firetrucks!
I think the presentation to, and the permission from, the authorities will be your two hardest hurddles. Somebody else may have rights or dibs on the project, already. I don't see why the supliers wouldn't want to be involved with this one!

I think you have a GREAT idea there Kathy. Not only will there be great Fun Cajun Style. The spirit of Letterheads will be able to rise above. Keep us informed

I don't think mixing Sign Gold and gold on the same vehicle is an attractive idea. The most difficult part of this will be air fare. Sure sounds like a wonderful thing to do.

I go along with Rick on the mixing of sign gold and real gold. Actually a little research needs to be done as to what NYFD uses. Most FD's are rather fussy about their trucks, I wouldn't want to send a unit done in Sign Gold to somebody using real gold or vice versa for that matter. Harris ( firefixer on chat ) probably knows what NYC uses. Another potential problem is that if they use Sign Gold most everyone at the meet will be able to help and that's good , if it's real gold a lot of people are going to be standing around watching two or three people do all the work . A noble idea and do-able with a little effort.

Well, I got in touch with them and someone else has already offered to do it in what was described as "some kind of very thin plastic with a very strong adhesive on it"!!!!
I tried to relate that NYC Firefighters are very picky and proud. They said they know as NYC has ordered trucks from them before and their specifications are different form any others. Even so, they will be allowing WHATEVER on a $300,000.00 fire truck.
Harris, get ready to redo a truck named "The Spirit of Louisiana."
Thanks guys and Linda for your interest and input.

I must have mis-read the post,as to the fact that the state of LA.was going to give a gift of a fire truck to replace one that was destroyed. Yet by what has been posted later seems to indicate that this kind act will only be accepted on conditions set forth by the recipents? Who ever thinks the "carpet bagger" mentality died with the civil war is sadly mistaken. Geez,Only in America

Misunderstanding. I said that the NYC firemen were proud and maybe I shouldn't have used the word picky. I feel they have a right to be proud and it is the tradition to take pride in their trucks. The fire department has made orders in the past from here and their specs and needs were "different" from most. They have a fine dept. and good trucks. The facility that is building the truck made arrangements to have it lettered prior to my contacting them. No one from NYC Fire Dept. has asked for anything I'm not certain that they are aware the truck is coming. The folks at Ferrara Fire Apparatus were very cordial towards me and said that they hope to work with me in the future. No one has been rude at all.

You know, I saw on tv where the govenor went to the facility and there was a truck parked and they had the lettering already on it. (with the state emblem and Spirit of Louisiana) I thought the truck was already built, then I heard they were going to build it. I quess they just used a completed truck for the ceremony.
Anyway, that would have been a great idea, but you would have had to get into it way ahead of time. I am a former fire dispatcher in New Iberia and a guy that was on the department is actually now a salesman for Ferrera Fire Equipment, I would have certainly contacted him to try and get the inside scoop on the project if asked.(you know I wonder if they have their own in house graphics dept) But looks like they got it taken care of. I guess one shop will get a little recognition, but it would have been nice to have had a mini meet with it.
Oh well, I would have liked to participated in that one, Santo and I could have brought the food

Tony, do you think we could smoke a ham or turkey over a sugar cane fire? Inquiring minds want to know. I need to know about some fishing spots over your way. I don't have a boat, so off the road will have to do.
