I made a run to a hobby shop Sunday to get a rattlecan of paint for lexan Radio controlled car bodies to paint up some vinyl, and naturally I had to look around the store for about.. ohhh... two hours.. lookin at all the toys and playing with the gas-powered R/C trucks they had on display.. By the way, the rattle can R/C car paint sticks like mad to vinyl..
Anyways, I noticed they had some 2oz plastic bottles of some other paint for R/C cars.. after a closer look I found it's waterbased paint developed for lexan. I asked the guy behind the counter how well it stuck and he raved about it.. well I just had to try it out so I bought a bottle of it.. $4.
He was right.. it sticks like freakin glue with no more vinyl prep than a wipedown with RapidTac to clean the dust off it. It's got the grip of vinyl screenprinting ink with no odor. I scraped, picked, scratched and rubbed with no damage to the color. It even withstands the nitromethane fuel used in the gas powered R/C cars and trucks.
I'm pretty impressed with this stuff.. at $4 per 2oz bottle it's more expensive than screenprinting ink but they have a VERY NICE selection of colors available in a pinch when you need to get it done!

The rattle can paint has a dull sheen to it and the bottled stuff isn't glossy either.
I don't worry about that though, I usually clear over everything anyways unless I'm only airbrushing highlights. I normally use vinyl screenprinting inks but if I'm only adding highlights I definitely use the inks because it dries pretty glossy so I can skip the clearcoat.
