I am wondering if anybody knows of published time standards for our industry. I have a book of engineered performance standards done for the sheetmetal fabrication industry in 1966. Our sheetmetal shop is unautomated (CNC Pressbrake) for the most part. What I'm wondering is if standards have been established for painting (3) coats of paint by the square foot for HUD carved signs. Of course the standard would need to distinguish between simple or complex designs. We keep time sheets for various processes and projects. It would be neat to know the industry benchmark labor times for some of our everyday processes. I know body shops use this type of method to estimate repair costs. I have developed some standards for our simple products like aluminum signs, 4'x8' construction site signs and the like. Now I'm sitting here tonight developing standards for our most complex products. I recently installed Cyrious software and it has me thinking that we need to establish performance standards to guarantee profit margins. Any thoughts?

Since the days of production shops are gone forever (mostly because labor became to expensive for what what they were capable of turning out) in other words they couldn't control the time constraints, I doubt if anyone other than some of the old Government shops (federally funded)would have any time standards catalogues.

One other place you might checkwith would be Signs of The Times (Tod Swormsted)he might have something in the museum archives.

In the current age of one man/woman shops and franchise operations...I would think the closest you could come to what you are looking for would be to contact the publishers of the "Official Sign Pricing Guide" those prices are based on someones time and from the looks of some of their prices... they must be based on the slowest people in the world (just my opinion).

Being one from the Old Production Shop ranks (that makes me a dinosaur I guess)...I got a hell of an education in "working under the gun punching time cards and filling out "cheat sheets" on a constant day to day basis...I miss those days (they made me really proficient) but I have to admit kicking back and just not giving a damn from time to time aint bad either.

How about some of you other dinosaurs out there...got any ideas?

The quickie stickies have blown that concept
all to heck! Having something similar to
what is used in the auto repair shops would
be great though.
