Quick question. How would ya'll price a 1" thick gold leaf stipe on both sides of a 48' boat in the water? It is patent leaf gold in a groove in the sides of the boat. The customer has already purchased the gold leaf. It will be outlined. The finish will be plain.

I guess it all depends on which gold leaf you are speaking of. Is it to be real leaf, hand turned ? or sign gold? Will it be outlined which is a must, whichever is used?
When you say the the owner is supplying the gold, does this mean he will feel that whatever price is quoted it should be cheaper? I believe in order to quote any job, you must give us a detailed view of what exactly you are using, whether real or sign gold.

I believe I'd price it high enough he pull the dang thing out of the water. Seriously, this sounds like a MAJOR undertaking. Any boat in the water is a royal pain. What are you going to work out of and how high off the water is the groove? Being on the water is probably going to play hell with the time it takes the size to tack. Patent may be the only way to go but it's a mighty slow go. Roll striping would probably save an hour or more. The real pain is going to be the outlining, trying to remain steady enough in whatever you are going to be working out of is gonna be hard. Rest assured the water will be calm until you start the striping. Is this getting cleared? I figure it's gonna take two days at least. Price wise I look for at least $2500 to cover the aggravation that's gonna go along with the job. The fact the the owner has already purchased the gold is no big deal, it's not going to be as big a factor as the time. Two rolls would more than do the boat, I think four books would be required going that route. If the groove isn't too radical I'd definately sell him on signgold. The places that cater to the fire departments can suppy this stuff in rolls with the outlines already done making a much easier job of it.

The groove gives it away as a sailboat. Stripe will be about the width of a thumbnail. A quality job..in my opinion ..is impossible to while the boat is in the water.Dont even try it. The groove will be just deep enough to make patent gold useless..it will show splits and cracks...you will end up gilding at least twice..if not more just to hide the cracks.Wastes a lot of gold. This gild will need a clearcoat because of a the threat of abrasion.Fenders and docks... More considerations.... 48 feet of striping takes a long time to gild. So you should use slow size because you could never get gold on that long a stripe before the tack is lost... So you use slow size ..wait a day...whats the weather gonna be tomorrow..? ANd then......OUTLINE???? Pinstripe a boat afloat? Try stuffin sign gold in one of those grooves? I dont think so... Yer gonna git hosed here... I did a cove stripe and waterline on a 8 meter sailboat one time...all in gold.Boatshop did the clear...I made em wait a week.. It took 3 days....to do the gold.. And it was one of the roughest jobs I ever did. It was indoors..I had scaffolds so I could sit down..just the right height....and NO OUTLINE... Be careful here..its YOUR reputation...

all i can say if its a sail boat...these are on the same client list as real estate, lawyers, used car people.....sailboat people figure since they get the wind(to power their boat)for FREE everything else should be TOO!!!!!

Whenever someone says that they have already purchased the gold, I walk. You know something is up...and it ain't good. Either they are cheap and looking for a deal, it's the wrong gold, or someone has already walked off the job. I've done a bunch of these, and I agree with Michael Boone: it really has to be done out of the water with saffolding all set up by them before you start. If you try to lean over the side or work from a dinghy you will end up wanting to shoot yourself before it's through.
IF they take it out of the water and bring it indoors, and IF they set up scaffolding so that you an walk down both sides of the boat with the cove stripe at about chest level, and IF they let you use loose leaf that you supply, it can be a worthwhile project. I usually run fineline tape along the edge and paint on the slow size that way. Don't try to be a hero and brush the size without tape...it is difficult to keep a line straight on the edge of the cove stripe without tape. And yes, it should be clearcoated unless they promise to be super careful.
I figure about a half day for sizing under those conditions and another half for gilding. I wouldn't try to spin it. If you get the edge nice and straight (hence the tape) you shouldn't have to outline it. My price (I forget the length exactly) would be somewhere around $1500.

There`s no way I would attempt that with the boat in the water.I once did a canal boat in the water (they are long narrow barges.) That was bad enough and took about three times as long as it ought to have. And I was only painting the traditional styalized roses on it. but a long straight line - no way.
