Aint nothing quite as sexy as those space-age era signs, eh?

http://home.san.rr.com/wackel/Signs/Sign09.html

This is a set of several well shot photos of different space age (read that 60's era) large signs. I dont think we'll ever see this stuff come back, but I'm sure as hell glad it was done once and stood the test of time. This is the sorta sign stuff I grew up admiring and always wondering, "how'd they build that???"

Obviously "Pre-Sign Police" work hahahaha

Local city engineer would have a heart attack if I submitted stuff like that for a permit

Thing is .. it was all done with what yer had between yer ears and has stood the test of time.
Simple logics and the old "rule-of-thumb" worked. Try using it today!

Example ... submitted an illuminated pylon sign for a permit based on my experience over the years. Suddenly the foundations had to be twice the depth and twice as wide!!!! 6ft deep and 4 ft diameter ... we are only talking about an 8x4 box on a 8ft pole!

I rember these type of signs..In fact I have designed some very similar during the 60's.

One of the problems we had was that one side was a "piece of cake"....the other side sometimes was a different story,(as for design)it just did'nt look right.

And I am sure the permit office would run you out of town today...he he he.

By the way if they made welfare as hard to get as a sign permit.......life would be a lot easier...

I always have to wonder; How did they get them to PAY for all that flash and fabrication? WHY did they?

My father had one like these made that I really wish I had a picture of. It was a giant sideways checkmark with two cans attached. The thing really looked about as flashy as the new '61 Caddy he drove. What is even more interesting is that I remember seeing the hand-drawn water-color skecthes of the various proposals. Prices ran anywhere from $750-2300 for the finished goods. Dad chose the biggest one as he was fluch and wanted the sign to really get noticed. It must have worked as 22 years later he retired off the place and lived the rest of his days comfortably.
This is what I love about this BB...lotsa sign ideas and directions we all have forgotten!

Hi Robb!
Like the signs. They're tacky in a cool sort of way, right up my alley. Reminds me of my late Uncle Joe, who always stole towels, ashtrays, & cutlery from Holiday Inns way-back-when.
Love- JILL
ps mebbe we could check out The Hitching Post Motel sometime????
