Is it possible to use a dvd player on a computer as a cdrom? I sent a cd with clipart on it to a guy, and he says it locks up his computer, but that he is using his dvd as a cdrom. Never knew you could do that. THe filetype I saved the art in was ai.eps. Worked fine on my computer.

Mine works fine as both! Should work on his, unless his doesn't have enough RAM to process the artwork.

Yeah the CDROM should work A-OK in his DVD player, he's got some kinda problem. Probably needs to download the latest drivers for his drive.

Somethings I would consider here,
1 - are you sure your cd-r (I'm assuming thats what it was) was a good burn? If it's a dud, a lot of drives will get seriously frustrated with it and give a BSOD (blue screen of death)

2 - I'm going to assume here his machine is a factory built unit, or he's added the dvd drive out of a retail over the counter package. If it has some sort of auto-start software, that could be causing the problem.

3 - does any other cd's (or cd-r's if thats the case) cause this condition? If not, it makes the disc you sent our number one suspect for the problem.

DVD's and CD's are pretty much the same concept, its just the DVD has a better tracking system for the laser.

He said when he tried to access it, it locked up his system, but I tried it out before I sent it. Worked fine on my machine. Coulda been a bad cd though. Don't sound right.

Ok some ideas of what the problem can be,
one of them being is his DVD player an older one, some CD players wont read a CD-r or a CDR-W just cause they are old, some systems when a DVD player tries to read a CD in the DVD-CD player will cause a system Crash, I have a CD-DVD player in my machine and it just wont read a CD-R but it wont lock up I dont think it is your CD,

another factor to check on did you check the CD in your reg CD player. sometimes if we dont finalize the session we make only able to read in a CD-R and not in a reg-CD player. and again when a system tries to access it , it will crash the system, thats cause he may have issues with windows

But I think that its his system, I am guessing he has an older DVD player in his computer....

another issue is that his windows (I am assuming its Windows) is corrupted in some maner, this will cause a lock up in this situation. anyhow let me know how it goes, and if this helps
