Check this out. I get a call from this credit fixer upper lady. She wants to know banner prices. I go ahead & tell her we only do custom banners & we don't have a set price. (I could tell she wants something cheap)

Anyway, I went ahead & quoted her & she practically blew up & said: " I can get eight 3'x6's for $180.!"

I'm not saying anything else...

Actually, she's probably right. The banners she is refering to are most likely pre-printed banners.

The problem we face is that the general public doesn't understand these things. And, unfortunately, we sometimes have to become their educators.

Well, that being the case, I can't blame her. Its not her fault. Blame belongs to the idiot who came up with that price!

I really don't know how these people make money.
How could you possibly sell a 6' banner for $22.50?
I always wonder if sign businesses in my area are fronts for something else!

Hey Felix...

Just shine it on, brother. There is little you can do from your end.

Like what said before, you can't fault her. She's just looking for the cheapest possible price and it sounds like she got one.

Have a great one!

I don't do banners (or rather I haven't) but that $22.50 per banner gets me. Grabbing my Grimco catalog (as my desk is such a mess it's the only one I can see right now)... a 6'x2' 10 oz. cheap banner is $9.50. So, they're gonna letter the banner for $13.00. I wouldn't turn my cutter on for $13.00.

Practically blew up? What's wrong with her? She already had a cheap bid, as Ms K analyzed, and she should have already been happy. And yet she acted unhappy. To re-enforce what the others have said, I'll add that I'd rather not deal much with the emotionally unstable.

KissyMat and everybody else please turn to page 48 in your SBI this issue and read Butch Anton's article. Here in Lafayette, both the Coke and Pepsi distributors will "hook you up" with a banner for $25 dollars and letter it for you on the part next to their 20" x 20" logo.
I had planned to donate a 3' x 10' banner to the football jamoree for my son's school. I figured how much it would cost me and decided I'd try Pepsi. I got a special school coordinator and asked for a couple of banners for the event and she provide me with 4 banners free of charge(she mentioned that their cost was $50 each), one for each entrance. When I went to pick them up, their shop had 3 workers and rolls of die-cut letters in different sizes in red, blue, and black and stacks of banner blanks.
So don't hate her for telling you the truth. There are ways to get these banners for much cheaper than you could do them.

A local windsheild guy with the temporary shelter of the road had one of the $25 dollar signs hung up from a tree to a highway sign. I stopped and talked to him about some better qualiuty advertisement. He said he saw the need and would be talking to the wife about it, I stopped by a few days later and got the same response, so I figured he was blowing smoke. Two weeks later, he had another banner 2 x 4 with a paragraph on it. Later he added another spray painted, white w/black stencil leters, 2 x 4 sitting on the paint table of a step ladder. Next he added a section of white fence with various dings, stars, cracks and runs using the famed marks-a-lot technique. Where is the Ugly Sign of the Month Contest. Folks we have a winner!!!!

Santo, I know what you're referring to. I have a friend who owns a beer distributorship and she gets banners for her store from her suppliers. FREE. Course, they have the Bud or Miller logo on em and they'll put whatever she wants on them. If she sells more bud because of a banner she got from the supplier, she has to buy more from them. Makes sense. However, I do not think this is the credit fixer upper lady wants a Pepsi, Coke or bud logo on the banners for her business so these 'free' banners are irrelevant.

I'd say, "Sure I can give you eight 3'x6' white banners for $22 each. What color Sharpie marker would you like with it?"

Kissy, whatever shapes the public perception may come into play here. Remember Mrs Credit fixer upper is a can do person. She know that these signs exists for a cheap price for any business. If the perception exists in the customer's mind, then it's a reality we have to contend with as vendors. Like Glen said previously, we have to educate the public as to what they get with the free, cheap sign. In that way, we show them that the public will form an opinion of their business based on what is shown to them by that business. If they understand how perception works then they can easily see why these free, cheap signs scream; "Low quality work accepted and provided."

Felix,

You tryin to steal my customers? hahahaha

In these parts it's a brother-in-law that has a machine and everything can be had for $29.99, except for "his" competition which lowballs at $25 even, plus tax.

I'm gettin to the point of saying, "if you want sompn below $50...hang up now, it ain't gonna happen!" in my outgoing message.
