Received this E-mail this AM. from a customer.
I checked McAfee.com this am but they have nothing listed, but better safe than sorry. You can never be too carefull I guess. I didn't see it listed in McAfee's list of hoaxs either

Subject: Virus Warning

PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE YOU HAVE AN E-MAIL ADDRESS FOR.
If you receive an email titled "Lets watch TV" DO NOT OPEN IT. It will erase everything on your hard drive. This information was announced yesterday morning from IBM; AOL states that "KALI" is a very dangerous virus, much worse than "Melissa,"and that there is NO remedy for it at this time.
Some very sick individual has succeeded in using the reformat function from Norton Utilities causing it to completely erase all documents on the hard drive. It has been designed to work with Netscape Navigator and
Microsoft Internet Explorer. It destroys Macintosh and IBM compatible computers.
This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it. Pass this warning along to EVERYONE in your address book and please share it with all your online friends ASAP so that this threat may be stopped.
Please practice cautionary measures and tell anyone that may have access to your computer. Forward this warning to everyone that might access the Internet. If you receive any mail with the following file attachments, please do not open and delete them immediately. List of exe files not to be opened - DO NOT RUN and DO NOT LAUNCH THEM at all!! There is no remedy or cure. They will completely wipeout all your data in your hard disk and destroy all your emails!
The viruses are:
1) buddylst.exe
2) calcu18r.exe
3) deathpr.exe
4) einstein.exe
5) happ.exe
6) happy99.exe
7) japanese.exe
8) keypress.exe
9) kitty.exe
10) teletubb.exe
Do pass on this important message to all your friends and business associates.

On that subject, I was wondering...
Can ANY virus 'destroy your hard drive, wipe out EVERYTHING on your computer, delete all your junkmail, cause your cat to go bald....." just by 'reading' the message?
I was under the understanding that a virus must be launched to do harm.....i.e. a exe. (excutable) file, etc.
I read most of my mail, but never download anything suspicious or unknown, that would be plain stupid.
I get these warnings all the time from well meaning but new to the internet friends who panic at the very hint of virus!
Just curious....I MAY be in terrible danger after all

A!!

Adrienne, to my limited knowledge, if you retrieve your email and you go to select it to delete it, it's on your system. The only way to avoid deleting unknown and unwanted email that I know of is to use a program called Eremove. It allows you to view all incoming email and delete it before it arrives on your hardrive. I love it.

I don't remember where the original link came from, but this is what a new search brought up. The program is free.

Adrienne,

It used to be that you had to open an attachment, but some people have figured out a way to exploit security holes in email clients, so that is no longer the case. (Most of them you would still have to open the attachment to be infected)

Donna's suggestion is good, but I'm content with having real-time virus protection running. It has always caught any virii people have sent (including two today). If you keep your virus definitions up to date, you are pretty safe. There is the possibility of getting infected with an absolutely brand new virus, but you'd have to be pretty unlucky. Norton Antivirus also tries to identify virus-like activity to protect you from unknown virii.

One of the most common tricks these idiots use is to name the virus whatever.jpg.vbs These people are counting on people having their file extensions turned off in Windows Explorer, so all they see is whatever.jpg and assume it's safe to open.

File extensions to be extra careful about are: *.exe,*.com,*.bat,*.dll,*.ini,*.shs,*.vbs,*.pif,*.js

Exe's are usually fine, but I always scan anything anyone sends me, and have asked my friends to just send me a link to whatever it is if it's on the web. That means you're not downloading something you're not going to open, and the link allows you to see where it's coming from and if it interests you.

I almost wish There was a virus that would wipe out my hard drive........
Then I could put this nerve wracking piece of junk in the trash can where it belongs.............
At least that way I could probably get something "constructive" accomplished, besides dealing with my "Learning curve".........

Still don't know why it's called a learning "Curve"...
Mine is more like a
"Lightning Bolt in a Severe Thunderstorm....than any curve...!!"

I have my email forwarded to Hotmail so I can retrieve it easier when I travel....Hotmail automaticlly (so they say) scans attatchments for viruses. Wonder if this is protection enuf? I used to ahve Norton running all the time, but it may have caused me problems with my other computer, I want to keep my new hard drive running clean.
