Okay, this is a multi-part question. I have been contacted by a Harley-Davidson dealer. They want a price on installing the bar and shield on their floor. The size is to be approx. 10'x 10'. They said they are going to install an epoxy coating on the floor, allow drying time, then we would apply the decal. Then return and cover it with several heavy coats of urethane. (customer is requesting vinyl)

Now the questions:

1: Is epoxy suitable for applying vinyl over?

2: Will urethane react with the vinyl or is this acceptable?

3: How would I calculate the cost of such and item? I can easily figure time and material, but I am interested in learning the markup for a job such as this.

4: (Comment): I am checking on the legalities of the logo. Since they are an authorized dealer I'm hoping it will be easier to obtain the "Okay" from HD.

I intend to write a disclaimer for the entire job since they would be the one to lay the epoxy and cover the vinyl with urethane.

Thanks for any direction you can offer.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but have you thought about a 4-color process?

I just got an Encad, and they have a water resistant vinyl, that when you use Graphic Outdoor inks, and a layer of graphic outdoor laminate, and they say it should last 4 years, even as a floor graphic. I would think this would be the ticket, that way there won't be any "raised areas" and the laminate would help protect it from the final coating.

If they aren't up to the the idea, give them a "sample" panel, and see if the final coating will do anything to it.

Let us know how it turns out...

Thanks Mark for the reply. Are you interested in offering me a quote for the print and laminate? I will do the install. The logo needs to be about 10'x 10'. I know the logo isn't square, so 10' being the longest measurement. Black, white and a shade of orange are the colors involved. I am waiting for a reply on the exact color of orange the want.

If you are interested let me know.

Thanks.

Brian,

I had a similar request from a car dealership a couple years ago. I put a clear vinyl laminate on top of the Edge print to prevent risking damage to the pigments. I don't really know if the urethane would have caused any problems to the resin pigment, but it just seemed like the smart thing to do.

So far, the Edge prints still look good.

Anyhow, I hope this helps. When you finish the project, how about posting some pics.

Glenn,

I haven't landed this job yet, but I probably will.

I talked to one of my suppliers today about the floor decal... they called me back with a contact. The company is supposed to make some type of "Pocket" for the print to fit in. The pocket is the protective laminate. He described it as a "folder" or "sandwich bag". Go figure.
I assume it would be a regular print of some type. I could see me and my wife trying to install a getting stuck inside a plastic bag with vinyl.... well never mind. haha!
I have a call in to the company and will no more hopefully tomorrow.
I am interested in getting pricing on whatever is recommended in this situation.

If we get the job, I will post some pics of the results.

If you got the graphics produced by Gregory (sign supplier) a 10'x10' 3 color graphic is going to cost you about $750, so I would suggest a 100% markup on it, bringing it to $1500. It might be worth even more than that.

Since the graphic is going to be embedded under urethane, you may as well paint the logo on the floor because it simply is not going anywhere any time soon. You can paint it on there much cheaper than you can do it with vinyl, and put more money in your pocket.
