I was asking for advice on these walls on another post... The client wants to remove the copy: 'plymouth' and 'Jeep-Eagle', put Dodge and Dodge Trucks up where Jeep-Eagle was and on the other wall remove Plymouth and center Chrysler.
There is no matching backround paint (I will have to match it) and the exsisting blue lettering has faded from the original color I expect.
It was suggested I charge between $4.50 to $5 a sq foot plus scaffold rental if nessesary (it will be I'm sure)
Since I'm not experienced in repaints I would like to hear how some of you would handle this type of job.
BTW, chrysler's picking up the tab Thanks, A

Jon's right. Paint it all out and give them a nice design. Even if they don't want a redesign, I would redo the whole thing. Not worth trying to match background paint and such.

Repaints take just as much time as NEW! Endielible pecil OR majic marker around letters you want to keep. Repaint entire "BOX". Pattern for NEW copy. Paint!!!!!! Charge full price.I get $10.oo per square foot. This usally covers the cost of scaffold

Adrienne....repaint all of the background! As Pat says, use indelible pencil on the parts you want to keep!(Better to do a new layout that has a little more "class" than all same sized Helvetica...use your imagination and talent)
$10/hr is the way to figure your price! That should cover the price of a scaffold, or better yet, use a scissors lift...but then charge $9/hr plus the cost of the lift! Repaint ain't no easier than new!..I know, I am in the middle of doing 4 of them!
If they think that is too much $$, then pass it up! (Don't forget to get 50% up front!)

iam with the rest of guys here...start new...this way you get a new background. see if they will have the building painter that they use to blank out the wall, he can match the paint....if you want to recopy some of the text you will still be able to see it after he paints it. as for lift rental, see if the dealership can provide one...lot of times they got better connections with rental companies then you do. if you got to paint b/g, and get lift, $10 sq. ft. is about right. if they paint wall and provide lift $4-6 a sq.ft, depending on how fancy you get. just remember....it got to READABLE AT A DISTANCE...or it aint worth doin. oh and i almost forgot...GET THEM TO MOVE ALL CARS FROM THE AREA YOU WILL BE PAINTING IN, you get paint on the new cars and there goes the money you made...

OK, I need to fax the guy a proposal, so I appreiciate your advice!
Joe,Not only will I tell them to move all cars from the area, but I will also get a signature releasing me from the liability of paint getting on ANY car on the lot, period!! I've known car dealership monkey's to ignore your warnings and move something right in the way regardless.
OK, now.....when I paint over the inside of that line...what type of paint would you use?
Will I need to test the painted area to see if it's latex or oil? (it's flat) or will I just need to get a good quality outdoor latex paint.
Dang, I know it's not too hard, just a lack of confidence on my part.

This is going to get me in trouble with all the fine artists at this site - Sometimes big basic block is the answer, and this job is one of them. The sole purpose of the wall is to catch cars exiting the freeway and telling them what is sold on that corner. The existing wall works. They don't want it changed other than the message change. They won't pay a ten cent premium for "art".
Price wise - the worst that is going to happen is that they will shop your price if they don't like it. In reality, if you tell your story in a way that explains why you are going to charge whatever you plan to charge, I don't think they want to spend the time to shop a price down a few dollars. The key is, they have to believe you are being fair with them.
Patterns are no big deal. If you don't have the equipment, you know a number of people close by who can knock them out for you.
Sell, sell, sell your socks off! Vic G

Thanks Vic, I was hoping you'd say something since I got this lead from you.
I may show them a sample of what it might look like should they want a nicer look. But if you think they may shop, I would rather have the job than not.
But I think it would be better to paint out the entire framed area with a new coat of paint and reletter it according to what they want. MUCH easier than trying to match a spot here and there, move copy around, etc.
Anyway....I should be ready to give him a proposal by Tuesday.
