Here's a hypothetical design situation for you all to consider, and answer as honestly as you can:

A retailer of wicker furniture approaches you to design a nice sign for a new wicker shop that she'll be opening soon. She gives you some "rough sizes" which you will confirm during a site visit early next week. In the meantime you do some rough preliminary sketches, and think that one in particular would fit the situation nicely. It has a deep maroon background, with ivory/imitation gold convexed letters, and some victorian style woodcut illustrations of a wicker rocker & settee.

Upon conducting your site visit, you notice that the primary sign exposure will be dead-on direct south. Although you really like the colour combination in your sketch, and are convinced that it would look great for the type of business and location, would you pick an alternate background colour to avoid the premature fading which will probably occur? Would you go with your first instincts and try to sell her the version with the maroon background?

What would you do in such a situation?

I'd clearcoat the sign with Pelucid and avoid the fading!

Do I win a prize?

My answer, too. But, I have a question about Pelucid. I know this is supposed to make a sign pretty close to bulletproof, but what about fade resistance? Where is Pierre when we need him?

I would go with the maroon background. Just because if I honestly thought it would look best, then it is what the customer deserves. Haagen Daz ice cream doesn't last as long as the other brands either.....but it is best!

Ken...I'd go to CarQuest and buy a quart or two of automotive acrylic enamel/w catalyst and paint the maroon background with it.

Hey gang---Pierre has said several times that Pelucid is NOT a uv INHIBITOR!

I personally use the waterbase CHROMATIC UV clear.

It has done wonders for us.

Plus I get an extra buck a square foot for putting it on the sign!!

I have a different answer!
Is it going to be backlite or a panel paint job?

I would ask to use a different colour scheme. follow me...
An Orchre background, with (Lettering) to be in dark & medium browns..
(Wicker style or Bamboo).
Graphics to follow the theme.

A small splash of gold as highlight and some maroon as edge stripping or pinstripping.

Tasmus, Pelucid is a clearcoat that is actually strengthened by exposure to moisture unlike other clearcoats. It will not peel, chip or crack like most clearcoats and though it may not have a UV Inhibitor in it, it will not yellow or weaken so it will always protect what is underneath as long as the paint itself has been applied properly.

We've recently done a large job using dark blue as a background color, and because of the fading I see with this color in one-shot, used a Benjamin Moore acrylic. Time will tell as to how it holds up. Choosing colors based on exposure is a valid consideration. You may want to use hardener in the paint, then clearcoat with an automotive UV clear.

for a wicker furniture shop and victoriana, I think a dark green something like one shot dark green, would be a good alternative. Staying with the imitation gold.
