Look at the Layer Styles (scripty white F in a black circle at the bottom of the Layers palette).
As opposed to applying filter effects, PS6 places more emphasis on Layer Styles, which are applied to anything that's on the layer, or added to the layer later on. The feature is GREAT for developing stock lettering effects/styles that you can offer to clients ... and delover in seconds. Rather than remembering what filters were use to create an effect in older versions of Photoshop, just open your file and paste logos, text, etc. onto the saved layer.
