After reading a topic on the BB, I was always able to hit the back button on my browser (IE) and would get the screen of topics back instantly, with a rectangle around the last topic. About 2 weeks before the new BB format arrived, every time I hit the back button, I have to wait while the topic list reloads, like it does upon first launch or when a new reply is posted while I'm reading a post. The rectangle around the last topic visited is no longer there either.

I haven't changed any settings on my browser. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? This adds alot more time needed to read the BB, between waiting for the topic list to reload and having to search the topic list for where I was previously. Thanks.

Dave, when you click on a topic to read that thread, hold down the SHIFT key. This will open a new browser window for the mesages then you just close that window when you are done reading the thread. Then you don't have to wait for the topic list to reload.

GIANT time consuming pain in the BUTT?

You're turning into Lenny Mike. How can you post if it don't work?

We'll give you a call tomorrow Dave. Most BB probs are usually simple fixes, but sometimes tricky to track down.

I've been having the same problem as Dave. I just assumed it was part of the new BB software.

Every other time I come here I'll click around until suddenly I'm waiting 2 minutes for a screen to draw instead of a half minute, & sure enough the screen will never draw, other sites won't come up, Or if they do (from cache ?) their links won't work & won't change my arrow cursor to a hand point cursor. If I send email, it works, but web is disabled. Then if I shut down netscape, & disconnect my connection, when I re-launch, & re-connect it's still f***ed.

I have to close all programs & restart windows before I can get back into the web.

This happens EVERYDAY! Ever since coming to this BB, my internet use has completely changed. Before I was just using email plus the rare one or two websites to research stuff. Now I am constantly jumping between topics forums, posted links, & back again, so my browser gliches could be new because my level of use is new, but I actually noticed this right when the new UBB version started up. & not with the prior BB, or ever in my 3-4 years using netscape & the web.

I've been wondering if this happens to others, & put off bringing it up, but it is not fun.

Of course the rest of the experience here is, but that glich would be real nice to solve!

Spent a couple frustrating weeks trying to figure what was wrong. Thought maybe it was a memory problem. What I found instead was that Netscape 4.7x doesn't work with new board. I'm now using IE 5.5 which came with QB Pro 2001. Have yet to figure out how that works but internet explorer seems to work flawlessly so far. New pages load rather fast.

One thing I don't like is I can't review messages I'm replying to like I could before. Can't scroll down to read message so I don't stray too far OT.

Doug, don't feel lonely, my system is doing the exact same thing as yours. The weird thing is it doesn't do it all the time, this morning for instance it's fine. Switching to IE helps sometimes but most of the time it ends up turning to fudge too. The problem started right when the new BB came into play.

I have always used Netscape as my default browser. Until recently. Now I am finding that IE works a lot better with this particular bullboard. I don't know why it works better but it does. I still use Netscape for all my other browsing.

I'm so glad to find this topic. My computer is doing the same thing as well. When I was using netscape, I'd have to restart my computer a couple of times a day. It got so that I could hardly read the BB. I switched to Explorer and it seems to work fine except when I read a topic and then push the back button, it takes me to a screen a couple of days old and I have to hit refresh to bring back the new page.

It also doesn't highlight posts you have read like the other BB does. Some posts change color and some don't, and if I come back another day, a post I'm sure I've read is back to the same color as new posts. Weird!

One quick and effective fix in my Net 4.7 is to turn off all the java choices in Preferences, leaving only "load all images". I don't know what the root problem is yet, but the fix is dramatic.

I'm not sure about the PC version but the Mac version of IE5 has a "Page Holder" tab on the lower left.
Just load the main page there and you never have to "go back".

I tried the "fix" last night. Went to my profile, clicked on "update post indicators", went back to my profile & my screen locked up. I restarted computer, dialed up, logged on clicked on my profile, & clicked on "delete all cookies set by this forum" then since I had just went through restarting I finished the hangin' at the BB I needed to do to get my fix, then shut down, then restarted this morning. Same difference right? no more crashes last night after the "delete cookies" but 15 minutes ago was replying to a post, & locked up completely again.

Is it worth installing the newest Netscape?

BB CRASHED AGAIN!
Sorry I hate to yell about it but I want to come here at the end of a long sometimes frustrating work day, to chill out & relax, & I dont need 15 minutes of downtime, twice an hour fighting to re-connect just to get the boot again. Now that reading this thread confirms that the problem is with the new UBB, I wonder what the benefits of it are. Is it better? I've only seen posts from people who have been having trouble with it.

I did some furthur investigating this afternoon and learned something about Netscape.

I should first explain that we use Internet Explorer. At one time, we were loyal Netscape users, but switched a couple years back when it became apparent Microsoft was going to eventually have it's way on the software we use to view the web. Barb stuck with Netscape long after I switched. We had our share of debates over which was better, but that's another story.

A couple hours ago, I loaded Netscape 6 and headed for the Letterville BullBoard. As reported by others, I was unable to use the back button.

My first suspect was the cache settings, so I went to Edit-Preferences-Advanced and made sure I had the option selected that loads a fresh page everytime it is opened. The next step was to follow Barb's instructions in her post above and to finally reboot the computer and relog in. This seemed to solve the problem, but I'm not satisfied it is a permanent fix.

To test furthur, I downloaded and installed the latest copy of Netscape. This version is called 6.1 and so far I can see nothing funny at this end. If you continue to experience problems, you may want to try upgrading.

Please continue to keep us informed on anything new you guys discover.

A few here have confused my problem with a different problem. Myself and others have had problems staying connected to the BB with older versions of Netscape. When this happened I bit the bullet and started using Internet Explorer. I used to like Netscape much better, but I've gotten used to IE and it doesn't bother me like it used to.

My problem did not surface with the new BB. It started happening a few weeks before. I love the new BB.

I am going to try Barb's fix and will let you know if it works on a Mac. I'm also going to do a Norton Disk Doctor scan and see if any problems surface there.

Hey all...

We were having problems here, too. I couldn't edit my posts like I could before. I talked to Barb and she talked me through some changes. Everything works really good now. Still have no clue why it was doing what it was doing. heck, i don't even remember what Barb had me do... Hmmmmmm....

I used to be a very loyal Netscape user. I used the Eudora mail system, too. Like Steve, it became apparent to me that ol' Bill was going to get his way and not be happy until he had the software gig all to him-little-old-self.

I also found that deleting Internet explorer from my computer drastically affected the performance. Gee, I wonder how that could happen. I had to re-install windows and the performance came back.

I figured that if I had to keep the I.E. that I might as well use it so......... I guess you you just get used to using it.

Have a great one!
