Have a request for a carved, and gilded dimensional sign. 23"x18", border with gold and the lettering inside will be carved raised and gilded with gold too. Background is aged black, and the entire sign is to be 'distressed' to look old... What would you charge? Thanks Eric.

I couldn't possibly venture a quote without knowing the number and size of letters and whether there's serifs to carve, and any other elements that would add time like logos, scrolls, etc. For a hip-shot, Marks estimate sounds like a good qualifying number. If they balk at $600, they may not really want a carved, gilded sign. (at least not a "quality" one).
If you've determined they are willing to part with the bucks, the only way I know to be fair to yourself and really KNOW your price is right, is to run a full T&M checklist of every step involved and add it up.

If you know someone with a computerized router, you can save many hours of carving time and get a nice finished product, ready for paint and gold.
