I have an HP 6200C Scanner, Now I can't get the computers to recognize it, it is usb so it should be plug and play, and like I said I tried both computers and even tried different cables and the message "Scanner not Found" comes up every time. So before I buy another one or even send this one off for repairs I was wondering if any body had this sort of problem before? By the way we are running Graphix advantage 6.2 and none of the other software that we are running does'nt work either. We did install a cheap canon scanner in the meantime and that works perfectly.
Thanks and have a great weekend!
Neil

Hi, Neil,

If your 'puter is already running when you turn the scanner on, it may not "see" it. Try turning the scanner on first, then turn your 'puter on and see if that doesn't work. Or, if the 'puter is running, turn the scanner on, then do a restart on the 'puter.

This is the way my scanner works, and others here have run into the same problem.

Good luck, and let the BB know if this works.

Neil- I never had a problem until I bought a new puter with Windows ME. Now I have to do what Bill said. Shut down and start from scratch. Isn't Bill Gates a great guy!!

Even though I haven't had any luck helping my daughter install her usb modem over the phone, I will give this a shot.

I assume you had this installed and running at one point? Right click My Computer, properties and click on device manager. Go to the category that has the scanner and remove your scanner. Assuming the software is installed already for your scanner , reboot with the scanner powered up. On Windows start up, the system should recognize new hardware. Point to the directory where the software install files are when it prompts you.

That's my shot at it. This has worked well for other usb devices that I have had trouble with.

Pack up the HP, then return the Canon for a better model Canon scanner and there ya go. =)

I try to stay clear of HP hardware nowadays.. junk.

Thanks for the responses... I did all of the above... many times. I tend to agree with you mike, I just might buy the new canoscan, it's around $699.00 canadian, it's 48 bit and scans at 1200x2400. You know I've always had problems with the computer and scanner.. And I believe it was the darn HP all along. My computer has'nt crapped out at all with this cheap scanner.. Oh well another exspense.

We also have a HP26000 scanner, and had a similar problem. Unplug the the power coard from the scanner then plug it back in. It fixed it for us.

I don't have a highpriced scanner, except the one I got with the gerber system scanner 3 and it was
still a cheap scanner just high priced. LOL
I see no reason to buy 1200 dpi scanner when my edge only prints at 300. Guess you guys have
more sofisticated hardware than I. I use a mustek
scanner, usb got it for 49.95 with a 40 dollar rebate. Never had a problem with it.

I have the same Hp scanner and am problem free, although neil it may seem as if yours has bit the dust. I would try removing and replacing the driver first before chucking it. HP over the years HAS decreased in quality due to the fact that a LOT of people buy the 49.00 scanner. Hey they have to compete some how.

Anyway I have had a problem finding the scanner before and a removal of the driver and a reinstall fixed it.

Good luck

I have the same scanner and had the same problem last week. Went to use the scanner and it could not be found. Tried several of the things mentioned here but nothing worked.

I did a really stupid thing, I reinstalled the software but didn't unistall the original
software first so it ended up causing my computer to not boot up because of a missing file. Had to restore my entire hard drive and lost everything!
Loading all my programs back up ended up a time consuming project not to mention all my files that were not backed up.
Ya never realize just how much you can stick on your hard drive and think... I will back it up later. Hope to break that bad habit.

My scanner is working great again but I still don't know why it quit working in the first place.

I appreciate all the responses, and believe me we tried all the suggestions and more.
I believe it's time for a new scanner... any suggestions?

USB was invented for 'hot swap' use, which means your computer can be on or off, and you can plug-in or unplug your device without having to reboot to use it. SCSI on the other hand, requires a reboot - sometimes however you can get it to recognize hardware with a device manager refresh.

If you scan mostly logos for vectorizing, just about any scanner will get you by. If you're scanning for professional use - i.e. - pantone matching output, photo reproduction, etc., They you'll want to look to the higher end Agfa scanners.

As for your problem, I would recommend the following :

1 - check your power. You'd be amazed how many computer problems are directly related to low voltage, old wiring, or other non-pc issues. A plug that doesnt make good contact, a circuit in overload, people running their A/C, heat or washer/dryer, etc. Best thing ANYONE can do is buy a UPS/batter backup for their PC. Seems so simple, but then again so does a lot of things people dont do.

2 - consult your owners manual. Chances are, there's a troubleshooting guide in there. If not, email hp tech. You have to figure out whats causing the issue - hardware or software. At this point, with what you describe, I'd bet software unless you forgot to mention something like a lightning storm, kid dropped it, etc.

3 - if possible, try the scanner on another PC. Could be your USB ports have dog hair in them, or a piece of paper, etc. You'd be amazed...

Windows ME wasnt that bad, but Windows XP will be a MUST upgrade as soon as drivers catch up. It's that good, and truly rock solid.

for cheap scanners, check out www.consumerdepot.com . Be forewarned - they are not new units, but you get them for less than 1/2 price usually.

I'm with Bill Biggs on this one..I have a Mustek scanner..600 DPI max (real resolution) 1200 (interpolated, or whatever the term is) works great for anything I need to do. Unfortunately I had to pay $129 Canadian for mine about 3 or 4 years ago!

Still works great, even after upgrading from Win 98 to win 2000! All I had to do was download the Win 2000 driver.

As an unsolicited addendum... From my experiences in the past with Hewlett Packard..their stuff sux! Over priced, under supported and quite honestly... pieces of junk. (BUT, that was an unsolicited opinion! )

This happened to me with my HP. I found out that I hadn't installed the scanner step by step like the directions said. HP is fussy about the way it installs. Make sure that you don't go into your MSCONFIG/startup and turn off the HP stuff to try to increase your puter resources.

I appreciate all the suggestions... my tech guy is coming by tomorrow and I'm printing all these responses. I'm even considering taking these responses to Staples where I bought the scanner and see if they may give me a break on a new one, especially when this old one I have never did work properly. Then again maybe I'm just deaming...
Thanks
Neil
