Just about to close on the biggest order I've ever had. Signs for a small shopping center should be about 30 - 35 thousand dollars. I've already got preliminary agreement for half down with the order and the balance upon completion. My concerns are the timely payment when the signs are up and lit. I want to avoid that "normal delay" in getting a check from corporate...so on, etc. Does anyone have a generic contract with specific protection for the sign guy, late payment penalties etc. I dont anticipate any game playing...but a professional contract with straight forward language might make things go smoothly. There was a package offered a while back.Included work sheets, estimate sheets, etc. It had all the things you need.Just add your logo or letterhead. I think it came from the folks at Signcraft.

The package does come from signcraft and is a great resource for setting up your own, but why not get a lawyer to review it. It would really be a drag if you got screwed on a 30-35 thousand doller contract because your not sure how binding your contract actually is. You will be able to use your lawyer approved contract in future business as well.

I believe Ingrid is right. Contract legalities vary so much from area to area that a "one size fits all" contract might not be the best way to go. I'm not a big fan of lawyers, but on a contract of this size, a lawyer's fee might be a small investment for the peace of mind that all the loose ends were nailed down.
The key here, as in most any legal situation, is to be sure you find a lawyer who is experienced in construction contract law. Write down all the things you feel are important, such as payment, completion, insurance, and anything else you can think of, and have the attorney translate it into "legalese". It could save you a lot of money and headaches down the road. Another thing is that if anything goes wrong, (and it sometimes does) most companies are less apt to screw with you if they know you have a competent attorney handling your affairs.
