well had a bad friday...computer was doin all kinda weird stuff...wouldnt boot up givin me error messages...tried to reinstall windows and it locked up in the process...what a mess. i leave the cover off mine(as iam always in there)and so i looked inside at the CPU FAN, wasnt runnin, bummed it with my finger and one of the fan blades came flyin out. ok now i know whats wrong. once i got the fan runnin the computer ran fine...seems when they get hot ...the go bonkers...wont do anything. wife went to a garge sale while i was at "duck soup",bought a computer for $10, they said it was hit by lightning. i took the CPU fan from it put it on mine. the new fan had a bigger heat sink on it and boy do this puppy fly, seems they run faster the cooler the CPU is. ..so check your fan if your computer is runnin sluggish...and if you leave your computer run all the time....and this quits runnin...you WILL FRY YOUR CPU....good idea to check and replace at least once a year...for $10-15....good insurance.

Joe,

That is why when I purchase a CPU I purchase the "retail box" instead of the OEM version. Intel gaurantees the processor and the fan for 3 years.

I haven't had one go yet.

But the Aftermarket or OEM fans seem to crap out much sooner.

Hi, Joe,

You might want to rethink leaving the cover off your 'puter. Handy for tinkering, yes, but I read recently this can mess up the air flow and even with the fan running, the "works" can overheat.

For what it's worth.

Lately I have left my cover off because I have a small desk fan blowing into mine.
All my fans( I have 2 inside) are working but if I put the cover on I get this High pitched "whine" out of the cpu. If I do as above It stops. I guess I need a 3rd fan in there but havn't put one in yet.

i have a mid tower, and it sits where the sun dont shine(no not there!!!!)with the covers off it gets better circulation as i have a ceiling fan goin all the time. the wifes computer is a desk top..and the cover is on it, but i also added a fan from a power supply that is blowin directly on the m/b heat sink.
