With all the recent new virus and worm problems, does any one know if more than one anti-virus program can, or should, be installed on any one computer? If more than one program or utility can be installed, what would you all recommend?
Thanx, Bill Preston

Hi Bill, I would think that a any good virus protection program would be sufficient as long as it was updated often. The key is keeping up with all the virus definitions.

I agree, just keep updating. Instructions in my Norton Virus Protection says to e-mail or send them ANY virus we run across. If everybody does that, then their team can find the fix for the virus and have it ready to download to registered users in a matter of hours.

Bill...I don't know about all the antivirus progs out there but I do know that Norton checks for existing anti virus progs on the computer before it installs. If it finds one it tells you to delete it or de-activate it, before it will install.

A few years ago, Sarah, who once frequented this board mentioned reading some reports on a program that seemed to surpass the others. I purchased it and have been delighted with the security provided to me. They have a free demo version for a month if anyone wants to check it out. Rather full firewall protection also. Click his... I was using McAfee and got a worm that wreck havoc on my system. I went to McAfee and downloaded a free trial version of their Firewall. I started having problems starting my computer until it finally got to the point that I couldn't get it up and running. I ended up having to send my laptop back to Sony and they had to replace my hard drive. Fortunately I had things backed up.
I had gotten the sircam. virus after this and still had McAfee. It didn't catch it. I went out and bought NOrton Utilities and it found and took care of this virus.

A couple of months ago, my 'puter began to act up, and I got Norton's utility and anti virus package. Had my 'puter guru run a scan for virii from this CD and found none. What I didn't know was that he did not do a full install. I dug out the disc a couple of days ago, 'cause I could not find the prog loaded in anywhere, and installed. Have updated as much as I can from Norton's site, but even there , there is some problem getting the latest anti-virus to download.
Norton's package did seem to help some other minor problems I was having i.e. freeze-up on shutdown, so things are better.
Anyway, thanx again to all who tried to help.

Not only do they have a cure for the latest virus, they've made it available as a free download.
On top of that they also have every virus out there covered and they usually have a cure for the latest bug within hours.
They even have directions on their site on how to make your computer IMPERVIOUS to the VBS Worms, without even spending any money to do it!
Even though they do sell antivirus software they also always give directions on how to remove virii manually without the help of software - freely.
I know alot of people wont like their software cause it may not look as pretty as the others.. in fact the DOS screens just might give some folks nightmares.. but it gets the job done.
Aside from all that, virus protection starts with YOU. 99.999% of the time when someone's machine gets infected with a virus it's their own fault. I get a bazillion emails, lots of them are obviously infected (they're easy to spot) and I don't freak out about it.. just delete the message.
Interestingly enough, most new virii are mass-propagated via AOL users - who are also the same people that tend to completely freak out when they hear about a new virus... kinda like my dad, he's been afraid to even turn on his computer the past week because of the new NIMDA virus..man! I was wondering why I wasnt gettin any email from him.. hahaha.

GET NORTON! I was working last night while Norton Antivirus was doing it's full virus check on my system, and up popped a notice that it found the Nimba(sp?) virus, but was able to quarantine the infected files. I had just been wondering if the software had been doing it's job as I hadn't received any notices in quite some time. I've since done some extra virus scans just to be safe, but all seems to be clean so far.
