My customer ordered 10 sandblasted signs for a youth camp. Each has the name of an indigenous tree or bush and a painted illustration of the foliage. One of them is named "yaupon" but the client writes it down as "youpon". So, comes time to stencil the blanks and I'm checking spelling(bad to misspell a sandblasted sign) and I check it in the Websters. Webster says "yaupon". So I call up the client to confirm. He politely insists on youpon.
So.......What would yau...I mean you do?
I went ahead spelled it wrong.

I was in a tough part of town, painting a large 'For Lease' sign on the wondows of a closed grocery store. Beneath it I put in 12 inch tall letters "For Infomation Call ------" You know, no one ever complained. Funny, the real estate company never ordered another sign, although they did rent the place quickly and left the sign up for a month or so during the rehab. I pride myself on customer 'satifaction'! (satifaction was up for a year and a half before anyone caught it!)How come I can't get a quill with spellcheck?

Yeah, I know..it is 'windows'and not 'wondows'. I was testing all of you... One year I placed an ad in the yellow pages, advertising that I paint fluorescent windows. They wrote 'Widows'. Every widow support group in the area called and wondered about what 'fluorescent widows' were and how exactly did I paint them?

Is it CHILI or CHILLI? Is it BBQ or BARBECUE OR BARBEQUE? ------------- People in the writing business are supposed to use a style manual, like New York Times, Chicago Tribune or federal bureau of engraving. That's for the US. Foreigners who write the real Queen's English use a different manual, probably from Oxford or other holdout of Norman French. ------------- What's REALLY funny is the some MAJOR NEWS networks spell this famous terrorist name differently. Is it USAMA or OSAMA ------------- Was it Qdaffi or Kaddafi? Mao-tze-tung or Mao Zadong? ------------- When a foreign language also uses a foreign alphabet, spelling becomes VERY optional. Sometimes events unfold faster than the standard manuals.

Don't ever - never - EVER/NEVER do a "non-changeable" sign withOUT a signature of acceptance. Just like the engravers trade. We too, invest many hours of joy, pain and heartache in our work. To have someone come back and say there is a word misspelled is devastating, to say the least! (whether it be our fault or not) I do many large jobs in the thousands of dollars on a regular basis and I will never take a change over the phone. If I see that the customer insists on a wrong spelling, I submit a letter of notification and have him sign it to protect myself. BECAUSE, it is possible you may NOT get the balance owed you or the time lost tied up in a small claims court. Just like Judge Judy says,..... get it in WRITING !!!
Just like the sign some of you saw at the Duck Soup. It said ECHO's of the Caribbean. I argued with the client saying there should be no apostrophe. He and his partner named it that way and that is the way it is staying. I have his signature of acceptance on file. John

As a matter of fact, youpon is an accepted spelling for this holly shrub in the Southern states.
Regardless, it was a good subject to bring up as we often come across mispellings. I agree with Myra, get them to sign off specifically on the spelling.
