While I was away last week I had a call from a builder who said a sign that I had removed, repainted and replaced in it's original position had blown down - gone thru a window and caused $2000 damage. The builder has already put it back and strengthened it and has asked me if I have insurance to cover it (I do), but now I have no chance of seeing what the cause was or what gave way since he has 'fixed' it. How would you approach this?

Don't know how things are done in your neck of the woods, but here insurance companies will not pay on a claim unless there is proof , i.e. photographs or a visual "look see" by a claims adjuster.

So to ask the customer for good clear photographs of the damage to both the sign posts and the window would not be out of line. (and in this area without them there would be no money from the insurance company)

Hey Gray,
Something doesn't sound right.
Why didn't he call you before he put it back up, or take pictures like Connot said?
My brother is a claims adjuster and from conversations we've had, a claim like this would not have have been paid specifically because he altered the evidence. Now, I realize the damage has been done, but I think because of his invovlment in resetting the sign that that would let you of the hook.
In short, it's your word against his particularlly in his implication that it was your install that's at fault.

Since he's already gone and "fixed" it, the insurance company wont do anything about it.

Unless he has photos of the sign itsself and close-up shots of where the sign gave-way, there is no way to prove the sign even fell down!

He might just be coming up with some story to try and get out of covering the cost of a window that *HE* broke himself, but since you were out of town it's convenient to put the blame somewhere else.

Anyways, get him to provide detailed photos of the sign laying in a pile of broken glass along with photos of the posts or whatever other mounting method was used that clearly show why the sign gave way.

I bet he can't provide even one photo, in which case he screwed himself by fixing it.
