Our town is replacing the faces of it's entry sign (it needs it badly) and has asked me for prices. I'm trying to come up with some designs and have a few questions.
The only backlight signs I have done are all vinyl & I was wondering if I could airbrush fades on clear vinyl to add a little pizzaz(sp?) I would have to use a special paint that light would filter through, right?
These faces are quite large, and I am not set up to paint the whole thing, I'd have to use vinyl or contract out the painting.
I've considered farming out digital prints, but am concerned with fading/longevity factors. They would want this sign to be a long-term thing. Anyone have any advice on digital prints on a backlit sign?

Suelynn. I have sprayed clear vinyl with lacquer based paint to create colour blends on lettering/graphics on backlit signs.
It works quite well, since lacquer baesed paints are usually thinned 50/50 with thinners. This means that the paint doesn't cover that well and requires quite a few coats to become opaque. Another nice thing about lacquer based paint on any vinyl is that is does not require any scuffing or sanding. Just wipe the vinyl with a prep solution to get rid of any oily fingerprints etc.

If you spray the faces, I know you know that it should be sprayed 2nd surface. Grip Flex is made for plastic faces, so it will last quite a long time.
Digital prints now have warranties up to 4 years(I just started printing, and that is my warranty if I use Encad outdoor inks, outdoor vinyl, and outdoor UV laminate, or solar grade plastic), if using the proper inks / substrate. Make sure to ask for UV inks, and have them printed in mirror, to apply to the faces 2nd surface as well. If you us a solar grade plastic, (Lexan, the brand name, or a Modified Acrylic) it will protect the inks that much more.
I know a couple of people to talk to for digital prints, so if you want to go that route, drop me an e-mail and I can send you to some of my suppliers.

You can use GripFlex or Lacryl on first surface on clear vinyl too. Do so on a light box to be sure of translucency. Try to apply as much as possible in multiple coats to ensure durability. Thermal prints will last 5 years and most uv inks are rated to 3-4 years. The paints will last upwards to 7 or more years, depending on pigment intesity.
