On the other thread about digital cameras I haven't heard any comment on the new Minolta Dimage 7. Anybody know anything about it? At 5.24 MP and an optical 7x it sounds like a great camera. $1,500 is in the range of others, too. Still shopping and hope to have enough nickels together soon...for something.

Since you have the word 'opinion' in the topic, I recon I'll give mine:
I'm absolutely aweful when it comes to choices. I told my brother-in-law (a techie guru) what I needed and he reviewed all the options and came up with what we needed.
We ended up with an OLYMPUS, camedia D-360L, 1.3. At the time, it was reasonable, between $3-$400 bucks. I was told beforehand that I needed a decent processing program. Between the software that came with the camera and my printer software, it worked for me.
I can't imagine being without a digital camera. When I go on an estimate, I take a pic and one measurement. When I get to the shop I plug it in and design to scale.
I'm not into all the bells and whistles yet and I haven't the need to upgrade.
If yer new at it, ya know that NEW costs more and depreciates from week to week, I propose you buy something for less money to find out what it does and doesn't do for you. Then you can make a more knowledgable investment to meet your needs.
For general use, mine works for me! Cher.
one more thing I'm wondering what folks think about the camera's that use a floppy instead of the card...

I'm zeroing in on the Olympus 510 at $399.00 Dave bought the Olympus 460 afew months ago, and it takes terrific pictures. I believe the 510 is either replacing that model, or a step up from it.

I use a canon dvd. it takes full motion video as well as still shots. i am very satisfied with it. i can store hundreds of still shots on one dvd tape. the only draw back is that i had to buy the firewire to capture still shots. a friend of mine recently bought a sony mavica and it takes better still shots. more bang for the buck.
I'd have to agree with Janette. Our digital camera is an Olympus and we bought it on the net for just under $400. My wife is a shopper and the prices ranged from our price up to $679.00 for the exact same model. The camera works great and the software is quick and easy. Take a picture, open the trap door on the camera and plug in two wires and voila...your picture is on the screen ready to either edit, print or ....whatever. The whole process from snap to screen takes about a minute. Take the $1100 you save and buy your lovely wife something nice....

I own the Olympus 510 and had been watching the 460 & 490 for some time. The 510 is the upgrade and replacement to the 490. It is one fine camera for the money. Actually it is less expensive then the 490 ever was.
The colors are extremely vibrant and clear, even in low light. It has an iso setting of auto, 100,200,and 400.
Panoramic mode I have not used yet but is nice for some long jobs. I doubt I'll ever use the quick time mode but you never know.
The biggest problem I have with ALL didgtal cameras is actually getting real prints made.
You get the instant satisfaction of seeing your photos and the anticipation is gone. It was nice before to HAVE to get them developed to see them. I have a bunch of photos on my hard drive and if that crashes I'm screwed.
