Question for you airbrushers, If a tailgate has a small amount of art work would you clear just the art work and about 1/4' into the trucks original paint or clear the whole tailgate? I you do just the outline method will you get a unsmooth transition from the original paint to the start of the clear (a build up on the edge of the mask) If you are confused I'll be more than happy to email you a diagram. I know I confused myself. I'm dead in my tracks right now. Thanks as always.

Ivan, It's all according to what look you want. I have done airbrushing on a vehicle and just cleared about 1/8" to 1/4" around it like Rosemary says, but if you want a slick look you will have to clear the whole tailgate. One way to make the masked area not be raised too much is to remove the mask as soon as possible before the paint has a chance to dry. This will let the edges flow out a bit. You'll still have an edge but not as bad as if you leave the mask for the paint to dry before peeling it. Hope this helps. R.T.

if you're gonna clearcoat anyway, why not take the extra time and scuff the whole thing and clear coat the whole deal. this wont cost you any more than just doing a partial clear job and will insure that you wont have any problems with peeling as well as the obvious difference in the clear finishes from the original to the new artwork. time wise you'd have to mask the thing off or scuff the whole thing and clear. 6 of one and half a dozen of the other time wise. but the look will look more professional clearing the whole thing. mike
