The Quartz fire near Ashland, Oregon is only about 35 miles from my home and shop. Fortunately for us it is headed the other way toward California, but unfortunately several people have lost their homes. They figure it will be another week before they can get a handle on it. This morning the sky appears overcast, but in actuality it is a pall of smoke hanging over the entire Rogue Valley, and there is a fine layer of ash all over everything. The helicopters with dip buckets were flying over my shop all day yesterday.

I guess some of the other areas are getting it much worse than we are however. My oldest son left last night for Montana to drive a water tanker. Too good a deal to pass up, 29 bucks an hour, with lots of overtime.

I sometimes worry about fires here where I live. Both my house and my shop are tucked right into the edge of the forest. If we ever had a fire come through here, I'm sure the place would be history. We had a close call a few years back, and when they told us we might have to evacuate, it really makes you think about just what you would try to take with you. Besides my insurance policy, I came to the conclusion that I would take my sign kit and my dog.

I am about 200 miles due east of the fire in central Washington and it has cut our visibility down considerably. We are surrounded by hills and all you can see are just some outlines most of the time. The main affect on people this far away (myself included) is problems in breathing. I have some pretty bad allergy problems and this just compunds them.

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post on this thread: If you live in the area of any of the fires and you are experiencing ash fallout, be sure you have a good clean air filter on your vehicle. If the ash gets sucked into your engine, it can do some nasty stuff.

Not yet, but I remember 9 years ago, we were sitting here in lost prairie with three large U-Haul trucks, two pickups and our boat, loaded to the gills.............just sitting and watching the ridge to the west. At night it glowed orange and none of us slept much at all. The McKillop range fire east of Libby was on it's way, and firefighters assited by a God-sent rain saved us with no more than 18 miles to spare. You can bet we're paying real close attention to the Kila fire.

Crazy Jack sent me an e-mail this morning around 4am - he's near the Emmigrant gap fire in calif. and the spot fires, smoke, woke him up. I live in the forest area, south of that fire (not affected), but recently had the opportunity to chat with some CDF people & local volunteer fire dept. We're all shaking in our boots, just hoping it doesn't happen here. It's one of the worst dry spells we've had! And they just let an arsonist out of jail - go figure!
My thoughts & prayers are with everyone having to deal with forest fires. Having some past first-hand experience, I wish you all the best!
