I got a few of the Langnickle "Nocturna" lettering brushes (can't really call it a quill, since it has a metal ferule, but you get the idea). the brush is a blend of squirel, ox, and some other things, and is stiffer (supposed to hold up better on banners and the like).
just wondering if anybody here uses them, and if you can give me any tips to get the most out of them. i'm more used to my Mack quills (all squirel). i like the feel of the Macks, and i'm thinking i might just prefer to replace them more frequently, than to learn something else. but then i thought maybe these brushes need a break in period or something. (i'm not sure i got all the sizing out of them.)

Stiff??? NOctunas are nice and soft! Did you wash them 1st?? THey usually come with some starch on them to help hold their shape during shipping! I use them mostly for window splashes...hold lots of paint and handle nicely!

Scooter, I tried them when they first came out, but wasn't happy with the stiffness. At that time I was using Grumbaucher Greyspeeds to outline window splashes (very expensive, and the acrylics were murder on them)One day I had my only brush crap out on me at a job in Sacramento...in my panic to find something, ANYthing on a Saturday, I found an art store open that carried 'Mack' brushes. I'd never seen these before and thinking anything for 8 bucks is going to be crap, I had no other choice but to try one...well.......six years later, I'm STILL using those Mack brushes.....they make one specificly for waterborne paints 'One Stroke' series #2962.
PS, I'm doing another article in Sign Builder on special effect splashes for Christmas windows (Nov)..you might want to read it. A
