Did you know Letterville Chat has been around almost 7 years? Over the years, this wonderful communication tool has been a major factor in bringing us together as a community. We've met new friends, had lively debates and in at least one instance, it was responsible for one marriage.
We've made some changes recently to make it easier for new people to join us in Letterville Chat. I'm currently working with Dave Grundy an an update to our "How To Chat Page" at http://www.letterhead.com/chatpals/chat.html When complete, it will give those that use the mirc chat program, clear instructions on how to connect using this program.
The second and easiest way to join Letterville Chat is to click on the green Chat button in the column to your left. I'm looking for someone who uses the "green Button" chat regularly to write an easy to follow "how to" on the steps involved in using this java based chat program.
I want to thank Empy for looking after the chat all these years. He has now passed on the torch to Dave Grundy. Dave and his team of channel ops are usually on chat at peak times and are more than happy to help you get familiar with the spot.
We're always looking for new uses for Letterville Chat. A special Intro Night each week is one idea. We would all login at a specified time to introduce ourselves and have a few laughs. Let's hear your ideas. Keep it clean OP.
Letterville Chat is definately an extention of the Letterhead website and an "Intro-Nite" is a great idea! Although, I wouldn't rule out a daytime rendezvous since most folks have a computer at their shop.
See ya there, Cher.

Thanks Shane. When on chat, we often see new "guests" arrive and then suddenly disappear without saying anything. Are they having a problem with the nick or is something else happening? Tell us what you do step by step to join the "green button" chat.
You can go in and see who's talkin about you when you ain't there or see whos there befor you enter Probably why the "guests" pop in and out.Thats been my suspicion since someone almost always arrives just after a "guest" disapears. hmmmm....

I agree with you Monte!..it is an annoying occurance.
Obviously, many of we "chatters" have developed personal (read that "we have met in person") relationships. We chat about sign stuff, but we also chat about individuals also. Just like we all would around a kitchen table. When a "guest" arrives via the "green button" there is no way to determine who that person is. It might be a person that is being discussed.
We are all human beings, and as such, we tend to congregate together and mention things about folks who are not present. It is not one of our most perfect attributes but it is a fact.
Shane please take Steve up on his request and write a step by step on how "green button" users can register a nickname.
For me...Until I see someone's "guest" status changed to a real nickname I won't acknowledge that they are on chat.
I tried the "green button just to try it out and the istructions were so simple that I can't see anyone not being able to figure them out..unless, like Monte mentioned, they just want to lurk and listen.
We are all a family here folks!!
Join in on the fun...don't just "lurk"!

As one of the regulars (late nite chats) I used to going through the MIRC directly, but lately I sign on and no one else is there....I go through the green button and everyone's there.....that's the part I find confusing. A

What can I say Shane? Thank you for doing an outstanding job. As I look at the instructions, I see that a user cannot chat until they have typed in a nickname. This clears up the Guest mystery for me.
But it'll cost ya ummmmmm, ohhh i dunno........$50? How did I arrive at that figure? Oh I dunno...Just a nice, round figure.
j/k,
You use AI or Corel? They have export features for pdf. It's pretty straight forward as well. The main options you have to consider are whether to embed fonts, or convert them to curves; and at what ratio you want to compress your graphics. For example, the tutorial I posted was aver 100k, but if I had set the compression option even further, I could have made the file quite a bit smaller. Ahhh you're on a cable modem anyway, right?

Adrienne! I think that the only way that can happen, is that you're on the wrong server when you are using Mirc.. Therefore, find out how to change servers to irc.webmaster.com, (search in previous posts, for "webmaster" to find) and It'll give you steps to how to get onto the right server to do it, ok?
As for the green button, only until I found out how to get to chat through Mirc again. Then it was back to the nice, familiar program which everyone knows and loves

Good post Steve, Tonight U.S. time I had the pleasure swapping text with Kathy Joiner and (very briefly) "Marty" who I didnt have time to meet in greater depth. Don't be strangers folks, and don't be intimidated. This thing, and particularly IRC/Chat is a fantastic way of not only swapping techniques but "seeing how the other half live". Meet people from The US, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand... If for no other reason than to keep the conversation clean! See you there.
David
Steve, do we have a page on IRC shorthand anywhere for ppl to refer to should they begin to wonder what bb's, brb's, bbl's, ppl, lol's, rotflmao and so on mean?

When the "Conference Room" window opens, the box to type in the "nick" is not in view. Its way down the at the bottom and one has to scroll down a very long way to find it.
So, I was one of those that came in, couldn't figure out how to sign in, then, when I did figure out I had to scroll down, I for got to type in a "nick name.
So I just started typing a message: Hi everyone"
About that time I get kicked out.
Maybe that is happening to others as well.

Shane...I just got through playing around with the "Green button" chat.
I connected as per your instructions and just typed in "hi" instead of an actual nickname. I was informed thet "Hi" was in use.
I then tried using "Dave" as a nickname and of course a box popped up saying that "Dave" was a registered nickname and to type in the password for that nickname. We, since I had no idea what the password would be I just hit cancel and started yacking with Steve and a couple of others....Everything was fine till I got notified that since I hadn't provided a password I would be turned back into a guest in 60 seconds. Once back as a guest I had to then type in a nickname again in order to chat.
This time I typed in my real nickname and provided the password thet was required. Everything was fine.
Shane..could you add to your tutorial the process of registering a nickname using the "commands" window that is at the bottom right of the chat window?
I think THAT is why so few people using java chat are actually participating. They can't find out WHERE or HOW to register their own unique nickname and keep getting turned back into guests who can't type till they provide an acceptable nickname.

I think that this is a server issue rather than a channel issue (could be wrong though). If you go on there and use a common name, you are likely to get a message saying that that nick is in use. I would guess that is because the nick is in use elsewhere on the server.

it's been some while since I have been to chat. I fell into the same situation as Dave Grundy did, ah well I guess I will have to come up with a new name or find that password.
