We are currently working on a 1972 Cadillac ambulance (this is a fun job) and will be applying vinyl to the roof of this monster. Well, actually, we're putting monsters on this monster but I want to know if anybody knows if this roof is made of vinyl or what. It's not in the best shape and although I think it's going to hold our vinyl graphics really well, I just wanted to know what the heck I'm working with. Thanks for any input.

I believe that most roofs were made of Fiberglass. Hope this helps you out.

When I was on the local Fire Dept. we had a '72 Cadillac ambulance. The top was fiberglass. Boy did that baby fly!

Matters not what it is, just clean it well with Rapid Tac and "cheap paper towell" and do a wet application for best adhesion.

now a lot of the older 70-80 hearses had vinyl roof covering....to make it look fancier(always hated vinyl roofs, for obviouse reasons)if you got this over the fiberglass...then you aint gona get anything to stick to it....it has a "texture"and sign vinyl will not stick to it properly...

David, it's got the biggest engine I've ever seen and talk about loud! LOL, the old Federal is still on it and in working order. Several of the paid guys at our local FD remember driving them also. The guy that bought it runs an outfit called Fright Night and will be using the ambulance in parades and for display. I'll post a picture when it's done. Thanks to everybody for your replies.

I've got a 71 Cadillac Eldorado, and it is huge. It is actually longer than my full-size Ford E250. Its got a 500 cubic inch, 8.2 liter engine, which blows a mustang 5.0 out of the water.

I always wanted an old cadilac hearse for a sign shop vehicle. They have a slide out tray in the back to put the casket on theat would be great for building cubby hole on to hold all your equipment. Open the back door, slide it out and you got a work table and all your tools right there together.

For some reason Penny has veto'd the idea, says she isn't riding around in one. And this from a woman who went with me to Indy when we were dating to pick up a body and bring it back to Evansville, and she drove some of the way back. This was years ago when I worked as a paramedic for an ambulance service that was owned by a funeral home.

Back then all the ambulance service's in town were owned by funeral homes, always seemed like a conflict of intrest to me.

In all honesty though, we had a great owner and really cared about people and always said he would shut down the funeral home business if everyone would quit dying.
But, I guess you can't save everyone and this was two services that would go together, we did everything we could, but sometimes there are just a higher being that makes the rules and Jerry provided "Full" service.

Only thing I miss is turning on that big ole siren and hoping everyone gets out of the way.

Man, this post brought up to many memories, good and bad, sorry to be so long!!!!

I have also wet applied vinyl to "frozen glass"
