Morning guys. I was reading SC last nite & read about several big signs, larger than 4x8. How do you patch the sheets together? Thanks always guys, Felix.

Sand HDU edges, clamp lightly. Is it double sided, or single sided? Need more input! How big?

We have a 6'x6' HDU circle logo in production right now. We glued the two pieces together with Gorilla Glue and pipe clamps. The trick here is to put a piece of 1" masking tape along the edges of the seams on the blasted side, put the glue on, then take the tape off. This helps to cut down on the expansion of the Gorilla Glue a bit.
Also (as we found out the hard way) you should really cut about 1/2" off of the factory edges that you will be glueing. We had sanded the edge instead of cutting, but there was a discernable difference in density as you get near the edges. Had to break out my chisels and made a special tool to replicate the sandblast effect.
I took a small piece of PVC and ran six 3" screws all the way through it pretty close together. Then, you just keep mashing and mashing the screws into the urethane.
Good luck and let us see a pic of the finished sign.

Here is a close-up of the 'patch' job with a prime coat on it. You can see how far I had to come in to make up for the density difference.
The sign is going 25' up, so the discrepancies won't be as noticable...especially after it's painted.
Here are two pics of my 'rake'
Just keep jabbing it into the HDU at differnt angles and pressure.

Weird coincidence, Pat. We have two of them, one a 6"x12" and one a 12"x18". We used 19mm Sintra with screws that only protrude 1/4" through the bottom.

Felix, there are a myriad of methods for large panels. If you copme across a specific application, post it and I'll help you. Our specialty is very large murals with HDU.

Just a little side note on thew subject. A while ago, I had asked about gluing a broken sign, and many people wrote about gorilla glue. Well, I don't know if I just went to the wrong places or what, but nobody had heard of it. What I did find, tho, was Probond by Elmer's. I imagine it's close to the same thing. It's a polyurethane glue and it did expand after cured. It worked very well. Again, Ithank all for your input.

I prefer PB Bond as it works faster, blasts the same as the HDU, will even bond two differnt brands together and spreads out for a stronger bond.
