On the subject of Rat Fink and painting him... I have a question.
Is he a copywritten character?
It seems he would be, but I don't have my mags here in front of me to check for the little C mark. (You can read that as too lazy to get off my butt. )
If he is copywritten would it then be a "No-No" to paint him on people's cars and walls like it's a "No-no" for us to do say Disney characters?
OR... is it considered a "tribute" to Big Daddy to reproduce Rat Fink and say paint "In Memory of..." or "A tribute to..." with our own signature below as "the" artist of that particular RF. So as not to confuse the public into thinking Big Daddy actually painted that RF on the car or wall?
The just curious side of the Moon
Disclaimer: I realize here that I am asking for your (read that the BB members) opinion on this and the only truely real answer would come from Big Daddy himself or his family members, but Big Daddy is unavailable (duh!) and I don't want to bug his family. So I rely on those that might know this here on the BB. (read that as I have no problem bugging you all about it )
Now... I'm not looking to stir the chit or raise a holy war over this. I'm JUST curious how to handle any requests, should they come MY way, for that hairy little fly attracting cooler than cool Rat to be painted on any local RF fan's Hot Rods here in Spodunk California. (And another thing ... I think Michael Boone is way too cool to subject to the Chinese Water Torture some of have to endure when it's a Full Moon here on the BB and we ALL have our panties in a crunch and feel we have to shred the Topic Poster for picking the "wrong day" to ask their question... forward or direct ALL complaints to me on this one, K? I'm asking the this question today.)

They have to start with the consumer to get to you, but you will take the hit. They can punish you effectively just by doing something that makes you have to hire an attorney to respond. I don't know anything about RF, but if it is in fact copyrighted you would be wise not to copy it. Vic G

Michael, I am sure that the fink is copyrighted, and the ownership of that copyright is with a publisher or the heirs of Big Daddy's estate. I personally don't take on these types of jobs out of respect to other artist's rights. They will not be able to get much from you if they pursue it, because of the limited income that you will derive from the job, and probably won't pursue it, as it is rather expensive for them to do. It's a judgement call on your part, and I truly feel that it is more of a tribute the Big Daddy than a stab.
