Seen so many nice signs from hdu & signfoam...please educate me on the proper steps for priming and preparing for enamel painting. Tried everything from one coat to 3 coats of primer,(FSC-88 & Jay cook's) sanding between coats and not sanding between coats...When i roll/brush finished enamel top coat...quality of raised letters still not what i expect. Any Hints?

If you want to try something really slick, call Grain Fraim and ask for a sample block of TC Resin. Its a 2 part epoxy that you mix One Shot into for color. Squeeze it on the letters, spread it with your finger..... DONE...smooth, glossy, hard as a rock. White needs to be painted over since white ambers up to an ivory color...most other colors just darken slightly. This stuff saves a ton of labor which more than offsets its higher cost.

Who is Grain Fraim? Where do I get HDU samples? Is there someone in the Letterville community that can point me in the right direction?

Yeah.........go to the top and click on "Suppliers". Click on Precision Board. Email your shipping address and they'll send you a full sample kit along with pieces coated dead smooth.

I use the Chromatic (One Shot) High Build Primer, one coat then wet sand with 600 or 660 grit paper. The wet sand is the key as the acrylic resin buffs up to a low sheen which will give you a good enamel finish. This is the easiest method I have tried and I have tried them all.

I painted my first piece on signfoam yesterday, I primed it with waterbased KILZ, then painted with One Shot....looks pretty good. Is there a problem with priming with KILZ I should know of? Where 'at the top' do I click on 'suppliers' Pierre? Just wondering if we are looking at the same thing.... A

Daniez, The Grain Fraim is a steel frame with hundreds of wires stretched accross it. You lay it tight against an HDU sign blank and sand blast. It replicates redwood or cedar grain. When you're done painting and staining, it looks just like a sandblasted redwood sign. They make the Grain Fraim, TC Resin, and Dura Caps which are finials for sign poles made from HDU.
They are strongly considering becoming merchants here so if you call them for samples, be sure to mention the Letterhead web site.

Well, if they're considering becoming merchants, I suppose there's no point in telling you how to build one?

I'm sure there are many people that could build one. I was considering building one myself. Here are some facts that changed my mind.
They went through 14 prototypes before they hit the best working version.
The couple hundred + wires are strung down the length of the frame and back and then twisted together to hold them in place. This is done by machine which assures equal tension on all the wires. This makes it easy to keep equal tension on all the wires with the tension adjuster as the wires stretch from blasting.
Yes, after seeing one, I could build one. But I could make the $500 on a sign alot faster than I could make a Grain Fraim. They did all the painstaking research and came up with a great product that works as advertised.
Anyway, if you have time on your hands, know how to weld, and are mechaniclly inclined, by all means make one for yourself. I'm too busy and I don't weld...... yet!
Pierre, hope you don't take this as a slam on your idea. I know you are one sharp cookie and you know your "schtuff"... just putting in my 2 cents. *S*
