Yesterday, a woman brought a sign into our shop that was made by the previous owner. It was on signboard, hand carved, gold leaf letters and the rest was painted. The paint was just totally peeling off of it. In fact, those pieces of paint were curling up so much that it looked like the sign had been to the beauty shop and gotten a bad perm. She said it was on about two and a half years old and the peeling started in early spring of this year.
I felt very bad for her since she said they charged her $500 for the sign and she was hoping maybe to get 10 years out of it. Like I said before, I'm new to this business and I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas as to why this happened. Also, she wants us to try and fix it but I'm not too sure I want to screw around with someone else's screwups:-)

If you mean MDF board when you say "sign board", this sign is definitely going to fail if carved! But, if the substrate is still in good condition, and of the correct material type for carving, then I'd bite the bullet and refinish the sign for her (do you have record of the sign's actual age?). If the sign is beyond refinishing, then I'd create her a new sign at no charge. Having purchased my business from a previous owner, I too, had to make good on a few jobs. It's the only way to keep (or improve) your business' reputation. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!

My dad's not here right now, but I know we've repaired lots of signs from up on Big Mountain Resort like that. We strip off the bad part, repaint those sections and then coat it all with that Pelucid stuff. They sure get bright. I don't know all of the warrantee stuff, but I hear dad say that they can just hose it off once in a while and forget about it. We keep checking all the ones we did from 5 years ago when we started using Pelucid clearcoat, and they still look like new.

Am I gonna get paid for this? hehe'
