All right, here it is... We have two computers here at home, one is new with Win ME, the other Win 98.... Why can we NOT access some fonts in Any program even tho they show in the FONTS folder in ME. and yet when I copy the font from That computer, and drop them into the W98 computer, I can use them??????
this is driving us nuts!!!!!!!!

If the fonts in question end in .TTF you might want to check in the Help section of ME. Look under fonts, add, install, true type and see what you're supposed to do.

You can't just drop fonts into a puter and have them work...you have to install them! Go to START, then SETTINS, then CONTROL PANEL, then FONTS, then FILE, then INSTALL A NEW FONT, then tell it where the new fonts are located.
Hope that helps

are the font files ending in .ttf, or .otf? If they are .otf, WinMe will read them but not 98 (unless MS has a patch for it at WindowsUpdate I dont know about). If they end in .ptf or .ptm, you'll need Adobe Type Manager (free at adobe.com, the basic version will get you by).
Also - are you're sure they are PC format, and not Mac?
If you can double click on the font and it open in Font Viewer, your version of Windows can use it.
As for the installing versus drag-n-drop method, Si's right.. although you can 'cheat' it a bit, and go : My Computer > C-drive > Windows > Fonts. When you open the fonts folder, it usually makes Windows look at all of the contents, thus rebuilding the font cache in the registry. They should be in your font list next time you look.
For best system performance, I would recommend you have around 300 fonts loaded, although up to 500 would still be tolerable. The 9x versions of Windows handles fonts a little differently than the far superior Win2k and upcoming WinXP. If you need/have to have 1000+ fonts at all times, using Adobe Type Manager Deluxe will solve your problems. It can 'install' fonts without loading them into the font folder, which keeps the computer happier since it doesnt have to cache the entire font file. The other major attribute to ATM is you can group fonts in folders, and turn either the individual fonts or whole folders off and on any time, without a restart. This comes in very handy for working on a customer's job that uses propreitary fonts, or just so damn ugly you dont want them even near your computer!
There are literally zillions of font tricks, tools and tips. I've considered myself a 'fontwhore' for years having looked upon them the way a 9 year old does baseball cards.
I have yet to get a font to work in the spokes of my bicycle, however.
