Hi people - I would like to verify some of my pricing. What are others charging as a basic per hour rate for out of shop installation ? I like straight forward per hour pricing compared to determine price based on type of install. Any advise and info. would be appreciated. Thanks Peter

i stay away from installations...for this reason...you never know what your gona run into once you start it! you doin it by yourself, how much does a 2nd pair of hands cost, rental for equipment, permits, insurance.....etc etc......ill do simple installs..screwin a sign to a wall, or post, or a plastic face change up to 8-10 ft of the ground....things i know arent gona blow up into a big project....on these simple things i charge $20-40....fair price since i did the sign..

$50/hr per man, plus equipment rental if needed. That leaves up open if there are underground obstructions or other unknown difficulties. If we run into problems of our own making (like we forgot something or damaged something in transport) then we're fair about stopping the clock till we get back on track. In cases where clients need a firm number up front (for a P.O. or something), we'll pad the time we think it will take to cover our butts.
A note: Always, always take a hammer on your installation. I don't know why, but if you don't take a hammer you will always, always need one.

LOL....You always carry a hammer when doing an installation (especially if it is high) so than if you fall...you can knock yourself in the head before you hit the ground!

I charge the same per hour as my shop rate (calculating the time it takes me from the moment I begin loading up for the job until the time I'm done unloading the truck). I then always make sure I add a little buffer for the unexpected. When it's a 2 man job, my part time employee helps out. I add his hourly rate plus 40%. It works out great, because he's an independent carpenter by trade, so I pay him as a subcontractor on installs. He uses his own tools and truck. Also, I state on my proposals that an additional charge may be necessary if we have unusual circumstances when digging (as I can't see underground), or attaching to walls (since I can't see through them, either). Remember, time is money, and any time involved, from calling "miss-dig" to pulling permits should be charged for. Don't forget adding for materials: concrete mix, fasteners, etc., and add 40% to material costs. Sometimes the install will exceed the cost of the sign. We install probably 75% of the signs we sell (those that require some type of installation). It's an important part of our business.
