I have a set of prints I want to clearcoat (I have aresol 1 shot Speed Dry UV Acrylic Clear), but they have been weeded already. Is it ok to spray it, even though it will get on the liner, and then mask it once it dries? These are a couple of small window graphics... Thanks!

Hey Tyler, if those are the prints I sent you, it would be pretty easy to trim them real close to the print and then clear them. The problem with clear getting on the liner is that it will not stick to it so it comes off with the transfer tape and makes a mess. I could have cleared them for you or left it unweeded. Unless you are worried about vandalism they really do not need to be cleared anyway (unless you are looking for a high gloss). Worst case I will reprint them for you at my cost so you can have em right...

Tyler, we did testing on some digital prints for Tony McDonald some time back. I still have two of them here. we left them out all winter and the clearcoat is still bright and tough. Of course the clear is Pelucid. Doesn't ripple photos or vinyl films at all.

Tyler,

Go ahead and clear them, the clear will bead up on the liner then you can use a pencil eraser once it's dry to pull the clear from the liner if you are worried about it.

Otherwise getting clear on the liner isnt any big deal, the clear wont stick to it unless the graphic was cut too deep, thus cutting the silicone on the liner and exposing paper underneath.

Pierre's right. Pelucid did a fantastic job of clearing inkjet prints. Totally waterproof.

I should have used "pigmented" inks instead of "dye based" inks because the sun faded the prints here under the hot Missouri sun after a month or so with the prints facing straight up catching the sun all day. Had I used pigmented inks I believe the prints would have lasted a very long time especially if the print was mounted upright where it would be shaded part of the day. One of these days I'll switch to pigmented inks and give it another try.
Good schtuff Pierre.

Brian,
It's no big deal, I am not even sure if I am going to clear coat em or not. They will be in the sun part of the day, and figured it couldn't hurt to do so, and add on a little protection. It i do, I will take your advice and just trim the backing down close to the prints. Thanks

I've sprayed clear coat on weeded materials before and you can clean the backing paper up with a razor blade along the edges then trim and apply application tape. No big deal..
It does make a mess if you don't do it. Shouldn't weed before clear coating but I screwed up more than once...too much in a hurry sometimes. I used Pelucid in the last 5 or 6 billboards that I did. Stuck the prints on and sprayed. You almost have to spray 'cause brushing it on will drive you nutso...

We do some odd things with Pelucid and film. One of the common ones is to cut the copy, spray it with Pelucid, wait 10 minutes and strip it pulling straight up. Hopefully you have a good plotter that cuts the copy completely adn you tape the edge of the matrix down tight to the table. Let the copy sit overnight, then premask it and apply it. Talk about one tough set of copy.
