Due to a fire in our town's downtown area, they had to demolish a few old buildings which revealed the wall painted sign seen here: They are actually talking of preserving that thing, just because of it's historic value. To me it shows that even in the time of apprentice programs, journeyman sign painters and such, not all the output was by any means good. I don't think E.C. Matthews did this one. Any one have a clue to what the product S S S is? Some around here are trying to date this around the early part of the century, but from the typestyles used, it seems much later.

Hi, David-- The product is ,I think, some form of "tonic" which was usually some form of iron preparation-- an early form of Geritol. The other possibility is that it is some type of "snake oil", and completely useless. As far as when it was painted, the best bet would be to research when the building that was demolished was built. Then one could say it was prior to that year. Sorry, not a lot of help, but the best I could do on short notice.

Hi david, S.S.S. is a tonic which folks still take today as an iron supplement. In years past it was as common a practice to consume such products as vitamins and herbs are today. Now it is even available in tablets. The sign may not be any older than the 30's or 40's. My mom used to give all six of us things like that If you have never had a dose of Castor Oil...well, all I can say is thank God you haven't!

Kathy has this one right David. i remember my daddy talking about SSS tonic. my dad is still alive and kickin', born in 1925. it is similar to "Black Draught" another purging tonic of it's day. LOL
how i love those "ghost signs", thanks for sharing that one with us.
